The shareholders of Petro America Corporation are speaking out -- and their voices sound an awful lot like former CEO Owen Hawkins.
The Star's Dollars & Sense blog reported that a new shareholders website has popped up, linking to supposedly unaffiliated YouTube videos from shareholders repeating some of Hawkins' old claims, which federal investigators say were a scam that bilked $5 million
from thousands of investors, many of them from Kansas City's broke
inner city. (Read Petro's full story here.)
From Dollars & Sense:
In one video, Independence resident and shareholder Bill SimmonsAnd this line from the website -- "unjust governmental interference & intrusion inrepeats earlier claims that the company's assets total $284 billion,
adding new claims of owning 28 oil wells.
Federal prosecutors dismissed the valuation as part of a scam, described in a lengthy affidavit,
that prosecutors said drained $7.2 million from investors.
private enterprise" -- sounds like it was taken straight out of Hawkins' mouth. Because it was. After the feds charged him, Hawkins spent most of a conference call announcing his resignation blaming "government interference" for Petro's problems.
The shareholders website also celebrates Hawkins for being a "Black History Maker" but mentions nothing of the charges against him. Maybe he made history for negotiating the greatest contract ever written. one that paid him a yearly salary of $595,000 (which he could withdraw in cash from
the company's account at random). And a $175,000 just-because bonus gave him 500 million shares of Petro that he could redeem for cash, a car, an apartment and the sweetest perk of all: a "Gold
Management Dining Card" that allowed him to expense all meals ingested
up to and including five years after his term as CEO.
If all this wasn't wacky enough for you, there's this tidbit: Hawkins and a homeless man from Atlanta allegedly calculated the $284 billion valuation of Petro and its stock. It's just like finding the homeless guy with the golden voice, except this guy can do your tax returns.
The shareholders group has ambitious plans in their quest for justice, including marches on the federal courthouse in Kansas City in May and the White House in September.
