Earlier this week, the hockey writers at the Toronto Globe & Mail discussed the possibility of an NHL franchise relocating to Winnipeg.
Writer Allan Malki offered this revelation about Kansas City's chances of getting in on some hockey action:
As an NHL landing place, Winnipeg comes with questions. Is it big enough? Rich enough? Viable enough with a slightly under-sized arena in its downtown core?But here's the $165-million (US) question: where the heck else is the NHL going to plunk its Phoenix Coyotes? Kansas City has fallen off the list of possibilities. So that leaves, what, Houston, Portland, Seattle, Duluth, Minn.?
So we're out, huh? For Winnipeg.
So what about the NBA? Uh, not looking good.
Remember we told you that we need an owner willing to bring a team here, right? The Maloof brothers, owners of the Sacramento Kings, are looking at Anaheim. But what about the NBA-owned New Orleans Hornets? The San Jose Mercury News' Tim Kawakami raised the question of Oracle billionaire Larry Ellison buying the Hornets and moving them to San Jose. Ellison tried to buy the team in January, but the league balked. If the Kings move, the climate might be right for a second bid by Ellison.
