Dusty Peoples and Michael Goodrich got in a fight over marijuana last November, according to court records. The two brawled in the parking lot of a Raytown McDonald's, trading punches. Peoples, 18, is accused of pulling out a switchblade and slashing Goodrich in the chest, according to a witness.
"Take me to the hospital," Goodrich told his friends. "This fool cut
me."
Goodrich was rushed to Research Medical Center on November 18. Six days later -- on the night
before Thanksgiving -- the 19-year-old died from his wounds.
Court records go into more detail: Peoples handed a Ziploc bag of weed
to Goodrich, who Peoples later claimed wasn't satisfied with the quality
of weed. He accused Goodrich of grabbing and tearing the bag, angering
Peoples' girlfriend, who got out of the car and argued with Goodrich. They exchanged blows.
A witness told police that Peoples reached into his pants
pocket, pulled out a switchblade and swung it at Goodrich. Doctors told police that Goodrich suffered a punctured right ventricle
in his heart and a punctured left lung. He was in critical condition and
died on November 24.
Detectives searched Peoples' car and found a knife with blood on it, 2.3
grams of marijuana and a digital scale.
Peoples told detectives that Goodrich attacked him. He pulled out the
knife, he said, and pushed Goodrich but didn't mean to stab him. Peoples claimed he'd been robbed three times before and carried the knife to protect himself and his pot.
Peoples, 18, is charged with second-degree murder, armed criminal action and marijuana possession (he's accused of trying to sell $60 worth of pot).
