  • Rep. Wells, you haven't earned a roasting by my hand.
This week, Rep. Don Wells went on the record comparing Sharia Law -- or Islamic Law -- with a threat to the U.S. on the same level as the polio epidemic that atrophied limbs and put people into iron lungs. Wells did this on ...

Ah, fuck. My heart just isn't in this one.

Why am I bothering to even try and think of something clever to say about this? It doesn't deserve it. It's that stupid. Therefore, after the jump, I shall accurately and succinctly describe Wells using what's widely known as the Bugs Bunny Maneuver.

Let's hear Maher talk about Muslims the way he talks about Christians. See how long he lives.

Another example of the right worrying about shit that doesn't even register among the top 100 things that matter. It's the same meaningless, symbolic bullshit they always try to pass resolutions about. Check out Bill Maher's New Rules for this week - he articulates it way better than I.

You have a point with regard to the countries that have made some concession to religious law. However, here in the US, we have a body of law and Supreme Court decisions that place limits on the exercise of religion. A felonious act, for example an "honor killing" would still be tried as a homicide and the perpetrator's religion would not be an allowable defense under US law. As real world examples, consider the people who murdered doctors because they performed abortions. The killers claimed the act was permissible on religious grounds, however they're serving long sentences in prison for murder, nonetheless.

You have opinions but not a single clue. Sharia doesn't apply here in the US. If a person commits an act that is a felony under US law, claiming privilege under Sharia won't be acceptable in any US court. The same goes for people who commit felonies and claim that what they did was "Biblical Law."

Although the Constitution grants freedom of religion, there's a body of federal and state law and SCOTUS decisions that place limits on the exercise of religion. You can't break the law and claim privilege because the act was supposedly permitted by your religion.

How dare he be intolerant of Sharia! Everyone should support peoples right to use religion as a tool to suppress others, strip them of personal freedoms, and stone them when they change change religions.

Get a clue, sharia is a cancer, a polio, a disease of ignorance and bigotry of unparalleled proportions. It needs to be fought everywhere it is found. Forget democracy, 51% can always vote to oppress the other 49%; we need fight for two things 1) rule of law and 2) personal freedoms. Sharia is clearly enemy of the second, and even contrary to the first, since laws do not apply equally to all people (siding only with males and always against female, unmarried, or non-believers).

The truth is that in the short term the fear of Sharia Law is rather premature, but at the same time it isn't completely bonkers. Sharia Law represents a threat to Humanism, a threat to women's rights and to all Free Thinkers.

In European States where there have been large numbers of Islamic People moving in, there has been growing movements to exempt the Moslems from Secular Laws in their "host" countries. It is not just mean spiritedness, it is the shape of the future that these movements will effect if successful.

I was very distressed to learn that a long time ago the British had allowed Jewish Laws to function in Jewish matters with in Great Britain. That greatly damages the cohesion of a country and makes it harder to refuse the same deal with more aggresive and more oppressive views among new citizens.

Having a specific ban on sharia serves no purpose, as establishment of religion is already banned under the First Amendment.

sharia law, just like any other theocratic system of law, is not a very pleasant thing. it is definitely a threat to western values of individuality and freedom of thought and speech.

its evil, thats why. Just because its not part of law, a large amount of people use it in the usa, trapping women and isolating whole communities from integration.
