File under: Shocker! Retail black hole Borders Group announced Friday that it would close 28 more stores by the end of May -- including the location at 91st Street and Metcalf in Overland Park, which was the chain's first area outpost.

In February,

Borders filed for bankruptcy protection and issued a list of 200 stores

due for closure by the end of April (updated full list here).

The company's filing included an option to close up to 75 additional

outlets, so Friday's scroll of the damned may not be the last word in last words from

Borders.

Three area stores remain. One of them is a Borders

Express in Shawnee, and the other two are in Lee's Summit and Olathe, so

the only thing standing in the way of a Barnes & Noble-only metro

is a ragtag bunch of suburban book groups.
