Kansas' Arizona-style immigration bill really, really dead thanks to Virgil Peck's racist comments?

Virgil Peck is good for something after all. The bigoted Kansas lawmaker's "joke" about using gunmen in helicopters to shoot illegal immigrants like feral hogs is getting some credit for helping kill the Arizona-style immigration bill in the Kansas House.

The news out of Topeka yesterday was that the bill was stuck in a House Judiciary Committee and has been tabled indefinitely. The House voted 84-40 against pulling it out of the committee. Bravo, Kansas lawmakers.

The bill, which would require Kansas law-enforcement officers to make snap judgments about the status of suspected illegal immigrants, is the love child of Lance Kinzer and Secretary of State Kris Kobach and modeled after the infamous Arizona law.

Kinzer isn't giving up, you know, like he did so easily on the unconstitutional

ban on gay sex, which he said was unenforceable. (Not like this bill, which wouldn't at all encourage racial profiling. Riiiiiiight.)

"That was a clear expression of a lack of desire to deal with the issue

this year," Kinzer told the Associated

Press. "It's an issue that I think needs to be debated. I think

it's unfortunate that our opportunities to debate the bill in this

session are going to be extremely limited."

You can bet that Kinzer and Kobach are pissing fire at the thought of Peck's comment killing their bill (not that they'd ever admit it publicly).

Not only is this unexpected but very ironic due to the fact that Kris Kobach is the "golden child" of FAIR immigration, the nativist, anti-immigrant network that has been funding the anti-immmigrant/attrition strategy to scapegoat immigrant for all of society's ills. Kobach works for IRLI, the legal arm of FAIR, and this is great news that it's being held up in committee in Kansas...after AZ senators voted down recent slough of anti-immigrant bills, this is welcome news indeed for those fighingt against criminalization and dehumanization of migrants in a country that is, ironically, quintessentially a nation of immigrants, including those leading the anti-immigrant calvary to battle: FAIR Immigration.
