At first, it was a miraculous story: A 4-year-old Kansas City boy falls under a rolling car, and just as a wheel is about to crush his skull, the car stops after sliding into a utility pole. What a relief, right? And how freaking weird is that? The little boy is in stable condition, and he should recover and get back to being a kid again soon. Great story.
But, damn it, no. Put those warm fuzzies away. This is a crappy, sad, stupid story.
It wasn't just a scary accident. The boy and his 6-year-old sister were
playing in the car and somehow slipped it into gear, causing it to start rolling.
The boy reportedly then leaped out of the moving car and fell under it, and a front wheel began to run over his head before the heroic pole
halted the vehicle's deadly path. The bummer: The children were out
there alone while Mom was otherwise occupied.
According to reports in the Star, police officers thought the boy was critically injured when they arrived on the scene and they asked the
kids' mother, 23-year-old Leisha Riley, what she was doing while her kids were playing unattended in an unlocked car. She said she was napping and Facebooking.
Officers notified children's services, and yesterday she was arrested
for child endangerment and five outstanding city warrants.
