Google says it may hire two or three people as it hot-wires KCK

Google is bringing super-speed broadband to Kansas City, Kansas. Exciting news! But the company that operates the world's most popular search engine is not going to leave much of a footprint as it connects KCK to a network that moves data at speeds 100 times faster than traditional broadband.

Matt Dunne
, Google's head of community affairs, tried to manage expectations during a town-hall meeting on Wednesday. Disappointing property owners and job seekers, Dunne said Google may not lease an office, and its local work force will likely number only two or three people.

Dunne addressed an overflow crowd at the Reardon Center. He compared the gigabit network that Google will offer with a "sandbox with a lot of sand." It's up to users to build the castles.

Dunne spent most of the time answering questions from the floor. Here's a summary of the answers he gave during the first hour of the meeting. Paraphrasing now:

I am still recovering from all the barbecue you fed us last week. Sure, we'd like local folks. But highly educated, highly capable people from all over the world want to work for Google, and we pick the best candidate.

We'll furnish the network for free to 130 public buildings. But don't ask us which ones -- that's for local officials to figure out.

The number of local vendors that we hire is not going to be high.

The engineering begins now. Customers may be able to sign up for the service in October or November, and the service should be ready in 2012.

We're going to start small and build out. We don't know exactly what it's going to look like because this hasn't been done before.

We have a website. We are excited about the region but we have no immediate plans to reach across county and state lines. There will be a minimal amount of digging.

Live near the speedway? I don't know how soon we're going to get to you.

No, this is not a free Wi-Fi service. The digital divide is a problem we think about. We have no plans to build a data center here. We will define success by people using the product and creating innovations on top of it.

★ Maybe I should change my name to “Google” ... I might be able to obtain a better response from the Kansas City Kansas Unified Government (UG) when they GET CAUGHT illegally dumping in front of my house... not to mention their city trash services truck creating a 12 INCH ditch in the grass in front of my house. This fortunately was CAUGHT BY SECURITY CAMERAS and posted on YouTube... with the search phrases:
★ "Deffenbaugh truck #2193 makes 12 inch deep gash - CAUGHT ON VIDEO"
or
★ "Kansas City Unified Government CAUGHT DUMPING"

And to think, on 03/31/2011 Google picked KCK to be its first ultra-fast broadband network site (out of 1100 competing cities). Just don't expect help from the KCK city services.

Maybe I should change my name to “GOOGLE”. I might be able to obtain a better response from the Unified Government of Kansas City, Kansas.

At no cost to the taxpayers, KCK residents will have access to the fastest Internet in the world. A number of free connections will be given to schools.

Got to see the big picture here, folks.

Wow this became a HUGE non-event! Basically the whole thing is a PR ploy.

So if they're not gonna lease office space, will they be leasing ANY space? These ultrafast cables have to start out somewhere, right?
