Classy police operation they're running in Carter County. Not only was the sheriff charged with distributing meth -- a drug that has ruined more than the teeth of rural Missourians -- but also his deputy is charged with burglary and receiving stolen property.
Now-former Carter County Sheriff Tommy Adams was arrested last weekend. The 31-year-old was reportedly the target of a lengthy investigation by Carter County prosecutors, the FBI, Van Buren police, the Missouri Division of Fire Safety, and the Missouri
State Highway Patrol.
It's a wild story. Adams happens to be a Republican. He was elected sheriff in 2008, weeks after Democratic incumbent Greg Melton killed himself.
KY3 is also reporting that the prosecutors have filed charges against deputy Steffanie Kearbey.
The 23-year-old told authorities that she committed a burglary at Adams' request. She's accused of selling a gun stolen from the sheriff's department evidence room to a confidential informant over the weekend.
Now coroner Dennis McSpadden is filling in as acting sheriff,
"It is a sad
state of affairs when you have a law enforcement officer tied up in some
things he shouldn't be," McSpadden told the AP. "We're trying to get
everything back to normal here."
Best of luck with that mess.
