UPDATE: Two men have been charged in the break-in that ended with one wannabe burglar taking a foot-long butcher knife to the chest. Michael Stanley, the stabee, and  Victor Nelson have each been charged with first-degree burglary. Read the rest of the update after the jump ...

Original Story (April 8):
I've never seen a foot-long butcher knife, but that has to be a scary sight. Hell, Kansas City police even told Fox 4 that the knife looked like something out of a horror movie. An apartment resident stabbed a would-be robber twice in the stomach with the knife early this morning at 44th and Virginia.

The apartment dweller told Fox 4 that he'd been robbed three times in the last week. So he put up a mattress to block a window. The man heard someone knocking over the mattress around 4:30 a.m. Tired of being robbed, the man grabbed his butcher knife.

This guy + a foot-long

butcher knife = nothing to eff with.

"I heard the mattress fall, being pushed down, from the back window," the unnamed man told Fox 4. "So I got up and grabbed my butcher knife and snuck to the middle of my apartment, and I seen him, and he was facing the outside of the window talking to somebody outside; he had somebody else with him. That's when I grabbed him and I stabbed him."

The man didn't just stab him once. He stabbed the guy twice. The would-be robber took off running, but police tracked him down a short time later suffering life-threatening injuries.

He was taken to a local hospital. No word on the suspect's condition. Police already cleared the butcher-knife-wielding apartment dweller.

UPDATE: Stanley, 48, was listed in critical condition on Friday (no word since on his condition). Here's how court records say it all went down: The apartment dweller saw Stanley standing in his south bedroom. The apartment dweller overheard Stanley say, "Hand it to me," to someone outside of the window. The apartment dweller stabbed Stanley in the chest with the knife. Stanley ran but collapsed across the street from the apartment. The man in the apartment called police.

Stanley was rushed to a local hospital. Nelson was arrested after allegedly running into a police officer as he tried to flee. The apartment dweller told police that he knew Stanley "because he has a child in common with Stanley's sister." The apartment dweller said he'd like to press charges.
