Coffee Wonk robbed for the second time as business owners sue over right to sell 'incense'

  • Robbed twice. Three times if you count the police raid. Hey-Oh!

These are turbulent times for the Coffee Wonk, along with every other business owner in the area still selling fake weed, or (fingers in the air quote marks) "incense."

Where to begin, the lawsuit or the robbery? Let's start with the robbery! That part has a backpack full of rocks.

Yesterday, Gary Winslow and Michal Luzar and an unidentified woman allegedly came into the Coffee Wonk swinging backpacks filled with rocks at owner Micah Riggs and demanding cash. You might remember Riggs from a story I wrote last year about Riggs building a business empire from the Coffee Wonk ("Buzz Factory") and opening up a restaurant and recording studio in midtown. Riggs allegedly fled the Coffee Wonk seeking help, and luckily cops arrived in time to apprehend the men. They're still searching for the female robber, who escaped with none of the store's cash or goods.

Winslow is charged with one count of first-degree robbery, and Luzar is charged with one count of second-degree robbery and attempted first-degree robbery.

Amateurs. You swing a pillow case full of doorknobs. Everyone knows that. Or oranges, if you don't want to leave bruises, just internal bleeding. Uh, I mean ... so I've been told. (Now imagine me hooking one finger into my collar and tugging it away from my throat while shifting my eyes back and forth. Then reread that last sentence. It'll be about 30 percent funnier. Add some sweat to my brow, and it'll be almost intolerably funny. Maybe. Did you just do everything I asked? Sucker! Ha. It wasn't funny at all.)

Anywho, this is the second time the Coffee Wonk has been  robbed. Almost seven months ago, the shop was held up. When police arrived, they also confiscated Riggs' stock. And this March, he was finally hit with multiple felony charges for selling a controlled substance with intent to distribute, possession of drug

paraphernalia and possession of a chemical with intent to create a

controlled substance.

That brings me to the lawsuit part of this story. Tired of being hassled by the man (a phrase I'm sure they use with great regularity), local business owners are fighting for their legal rights to sell Syn and its synthetic variations. Five businesses, Coffee Wonk included, are now suing the KCPD for seizing incense from local shops.

The businesses claim that police seized the product under the pretense it is K2, which was banned in Missouri and Kansas last year. They argue that these were new incenses created using chemical variations not included in the ban. To make matters even more confusing, there's also an emergency national ban on synthetic pot right now. But who knows what chemicals are being used in the stuff being sold now, or whether it will figure into the suit at all. If you're intrigued, you can read a little more about that case here

The t-shirt shop "Ten Minute T-Shirts" was robbed within the last 2 weeks too. They sell the same stuff. I live between both businesses. Sad story.

"Riggs allegedly fled the Coffee Wonk seeking help, and luckily cops arrived in time to apprehend the men." It's not against the law to flee like a punk ass bitch so why say allegedly? Also,it's the third time they've been robbed. On Monday somebody jumped behind the counter and stole the safe.I guess everybody in the city heard this guy has money but no heart and now it's open season.Sounds like this dude needs to learn how to fight before he goes to prison cause he might end up in the same cell as his attackers. Now that's funny.

So hopefully Riggs was smart enough to avoid cooperating this time?
