A Johnson County jury convicted Joseph Mattox Tuesday of first-degree murder, aggravated kidnapping and aggravated robbery in the slaying of Keighley
Ann Alyea.
Mattox, 22, was the final man to be tried in Alyea's death. In February, Gerald Calbeck pleaded guilty to
charges of second-degree murder, aggravated kidnapping and aggravated
robbery. The 20-year-old's plea followed the
conviction of Alyea's ex-boyfriend, Dustin Hilt, who was sentenced
to a "Hard 50," meaning he'll be locked up for 50 years without a
chance of
Mattox's sentencing is scheduled for June 17.
Prior to her disappearance in the early hours of September 30,
2009, Alyea,18, reportedly confronted Hilt for
sleeping with her stepsister. Her body was
October 5 in a farm field in Cass County, Missouri. Ann Alyea was beaten so severely that her captors thought she was dead ... then they stabbed her.
Authorities say Keighley
Hilt,
Mattox and Calbeck were accused of beating Alyea so
severely that they thought she was dead. Then they allegedly stuffed her
body in the trunk of a car and drove to
rural Cass County to dump her body. But Alyea
started hitting the
trunk and calling for help.
After
hearing the pounding, the men
stopped and asked her if she'd tell on them. She promised not to and
begged them to take her to a hospital. Alyea was stabbed about 30 times.
The Star reported that Mattox's defense was that he didn't have full mental capacity at the time of the killing because he'd suffered several head injuries and was known as "Crackhead Joe" due to excessive drug and alcohol abuse.
Prosecutors weren't buying it, via the Star:
In closing statements, Johnson County District Attorney Stephen Howe said some of those moments included initiating the attack on Keighley with the car jack handle, deciding to put the unconscious woman in the trunk rather than on the side of the road, disposing of evidence and telling the two other men later not to brag about the murder."These were all efforts to indicate he clearly understood what he was doing and that what he was doing was wrong," Howe said.
Ultimately, that's what the jury believed.
