Professional bad person Roxanne Janel Jones, 34, has been officially charged with 11 counts of wire fraud and one count of identity theft for allegedly swindling childless couples with the hope that she could provide them a baby.
Jones allegedly conned several couples by pretending she was a single mom just looking for a good family to raise her baby. And, hey, if you wanted to give her gifts and cash for the privilege, that'd be great. Then, in a great example of universal karma, she was busted by a CBS news producer pretending to be an interested potential father, proving once and for all that you should never get into a grift-off with a journalist.
According to court records, police started hunting for Jones after being contacted by an unnamed Bonner Springs couple. The couple told authorities that they'd been contacted by another unnamed woman, who saw Jones in the CBS News report, and realized that they were being scammed by Jones for cash, which she told them was for rent, food and utilities. Jones allegedly went as far as to tell the couple that she was in labor at KU Med before disappearing. She was later picked up by police. She had been living in a hotel.
Jones was arrested in March, and charges were filed today in a KCK U.S District Court. If Jones is convicted, she could go to prison for 20 years and face a fine of up to $240,000 on each wire-fraud count. The identity-theft charge carries a mandatory two-year sentence, which would run consecutively with the other sentences and carry a potential $250,000 fine.
