If you leave your car unlocked and running, thieves likely are going to to take it -- even if your kids are still in the car. A 24-year-old mother found this out after leaving her 3-year-old and 11-month-old inside a running minivan while she shopped in a Grandview store, Fox 4 reported.
The mom walked out of the store to see her minivan driving off, which had to be a horrifying experience. The minivan was found about 30 minutes later along Highway 71 with the children inside. The suspected thief probably realized he had a whole lot more trouble on his hands than he expected and bailed.
A witness reportedly told police that two black men were seen running from the vehicle, which was found near an apartment complex. A SWAT team was called around 12:04 a.m., and a three-hour standoff ensued, ending when a man in his 40s surrendered around 3:39 a.m. Kansas City police say he was the only suspect found.
Charges could be coming against the suspect -- and the mother. You can't leave your children in a running vehicle. That's illegal. However, the kids were returned to their mother.
