This Easter, 16-year-old Ryder Spillman was shot dead near the Thomas Edison Elementary School in Kansas City, Kansas.
Now details are emerging about what could have led to the homicide, and police say a feud between rival skateboarders may have been the cause.
Prairie Village Police Chief Wes Jordan said in an e-mail to City Council members that police "learned that a 'feud' between these teens is most likely stemming from
disagreements between the Roeland Park skateboarders and our teens. With
Roeland Park closing their skate park for 30 days, I am keeping my
fingers crossed we do not have more problems."
The Roeland Park skate park shut down temporarily this Monday. Residents had complained about vandalism and graffiti at the park, but Jordan said the closing was a coincidence and not in response to Spillman's death.
KCK police have an unnamed suspect in custody still awaiting charges.

Adrian, I cant say that I know how you feel, because I have not been in this situation. What I can say is that I hope they do charge them as adults, I pray that there is justice brought forth for this murder. I would never believe in a million years that this happened over a "skateboard rivalry"...I know skaters...been at the parks for quite some time. We used to live at Pierson, thats where my sons used to skate...we had problems with some other skaters from different parks, but never would it have come down to murder. You're right, it would have been ended in a game of S.K.A.T.E. but the media is going to make all skateboarders look like murderers and evil doers because of this. Unfortunately, most people wont take time out to read between the lines and realize that this is not something that happened because of a disagreement between rival skateboarders. Its bad enough now that people who skate are looked at like they are just punks with attitudes, now with the medias reports this will make the skateboarding community look so much worse. I am so sorry for the loss of your friend, I truly hope that these two boys who did this dont get away with it. They will live with their decisions for the rest of their lives and I hope they see Ryders face when they close their eyes! Honestly, tagging of a park is not uncommon, but to think that this murder had anything to do with a skatepark or a skating rivalry is ridiculous. This had to do with misguided youth who have no real idea of the value of life. Its a damn shame that his body had to be found anywhere...this is a kid who should have been in bed that morning..not lying on the ground waiting to be discovered by the first passers by....
I am sorry this happened to your friend...I truly hope that justice is served on these punks that did this. I am quite sure that now people will really look worse at skaters than what they have in the past. This most definately does not fare well for Ropo, especially after you all having to fight to keep your park. All of the KC skaters are in my prayers and the prayers of my family tonight. this angers me, not only because it is a meaningless death of a young person, but also because it is being said that is over a skating rivalry. Honestly, there are too many young people out here with access to weapons and not afraid to use them. This is not over territory or who is the better skater...this is over ignorance! My heart goes out to all of Ryders family and friends...I just cant believe how senseless this is. One of these days people will realize that sometimes kids are just bad...they dont commit crimes because someone drove them to it, they do it because they want to and to make themselves look hard. Unfortunately, this young man lost his life for nothing.
i'm surprised they didn't find his corpse in the westwood view playground. that elementary school has been tagged with "ROPO" several times.
Please do not think that this was caused becuase of skateboarding. Stephen and Shane Reed, along with most their family members, were fake-ass wannabe gangsters with a gun and no reason to use it. Ryder was only looking to box those "niggas", and nobody would of thought that they would pull a fucking gun. Marc Reed, one of there cousins, said that Stephen fired the gun "In warning" towards Ryder and he walked towards the bullets. But really, who the fuck points a gun at someone, fires it, and says its a warning shot. Stephen and Shane are going to spend the rest of there lives in prison, hopefully. RIP RYDER SPILLMAN
