Theresa Reed's son is charged with first-degree murder in
the death of Ryder Spillman, whose body was found Sunday outside an elementary school in Kansas City, Kansas.
Theresa Reed told KSHB Channel 41 that her son, Stephen Reed, told her that the killing "was an accident," and he "feels sorry for the Spillman
family." I doubt that will be of much comfort to Spillman's family and friends.
Theresa Reed sounded candid in her interview with KSHB. She told the TV station that her son and his cousin, Shane Reed, are
members of "the New Mafia," which is made up of Shawnee Mission East
High School students. KSHB calls it a "neighborhood group," which sounds
like a polite way of saying gang.
Theresa Reed added that the New Mafia wasn't on friendly terms with Spillman, who was a member of a group called "Ro-Po"
from Shawnee Mission North High School.
The two apparently clashed at skate parks in Roeland Park and Prairie Village, and a gun was pulled on at least one occasion. She said Ryder Spillman wanted the feud to end.
"He wanted everything to end, but the end result, his life was lost," Reed told KSHB.
KSHB, citing court documents, reported that the New Mafia and Ro-Po were
supposed to fight last week. Theresa Reed claimed that her son thought
that Spillman was running with a gun toward her son and his cousin in a
parked car. She said her son asked his cousin for protection.
"He said he fired three or four shots up in the air and he said there
was only one that hit the kid, and that's what killed him," Reed told
KSHB. "If they knew it hit him, they would have went back and helped.
They didn't mean for this to happen."
Stephen Reed, 16, is charged with first-degree murder and
criminal possession of a firearm by a juvenile. Shane Reed, 17, is
charged with aiding a felon and criminal possession of a firearm by a
juvenile. Stephen Reed's next hearing is scheduled for
May 16 and Shane's for May 20.
Shane Reed's name and "the New Mafia" show
up in a bizarre Urban
Dictionary entry. Here's some of how Urban Dictionary defines them:
TheyOf course, take this anonymously edited
are known for their crazy antics of skipping school, disrespecting teachers, getting drunk on weekends, and being held back. They sag past their knees, and wear red clothing to show they are apart of the "Bloods". Though recently, they have created a new gang, known as the "New Mafia." They have recruited the two younger brothers and several other incredibly white wiggers to join their cause.
Internet post with a grain of salt.
