The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers went through with a plan to blow up part of the Birds Point levee in southeastern Missouri last night. The controversial plan has made national news in the past week because it posed a lose-lose situation for residents of Missouri and Cairo, Illinois, at the confluence of the Mississippi and Ohio rivers: If the Mississippi was allowed to continue to rise, Cairo would face a massive flood.
But by blasting the levee, 130,000 acres of Missouri farmland will be ruined. Watch the video after the jump.
Missouri Gov. Jay Nixon opposed the plan, and the state attempted to get the U.S. Supreme Court to hear a legal challenge to the Corps' plan, but the high court refused. Obviously, a lot of people were upset that the explosion was going ahead. Missouri farmer Bob Byrne told the Associated Press, "It's
a sickening feeling. They're talking about not getting the
water off until late July or early August. That knocks out a whole
season."
That just plain sucks. But according to Bloomberg News reports, the federal government estimates that with the blast, flood waters will
cause $314 million in damage, compared with $1.7 billion if the rivers were
allowed to rise. Initial reports say the water level in Cairo is already
dropping dramatically.
