In the past, I called Barbara Porter the World's Worst Mother. I was wrong -- to call her a mother. Porter was never a mother -- you can't be if you allow your husband to sexually abuse your 16-year-old
daughter.
Porter, 45, is going to federal prison for five years. She pleaded guilty in January to obstruction of justice. In other words, she helped her husband, Patrick Neal Porter, remove her daughter from protective
custody and run away to California with the girl.
This was after authorities found sexually explicit photos of the teen
girl on
Patrick
Porter's computer in June 2010.
On
June 9,
investigators learned that Patrick Porter had
used his credit
card June 6-8 at a Best Western in Huntington Beach,
California. Phone records also showed that Barbara Porter had received
calls
from the hotel.
Patrick Porter was arrested in San Diego where
he was found with his stepdaughter. At that time, federal prosecutors charged Porter with possessing child pornography and engaging in
graphic conversations with a minor in an attempt to convince the child
to have sex with him.
In November, Patrick Porter pleaded guilty to producing child
pornography.
Patrick Porter was sentenced to 20 years in federal prison.
"Cases like this show that children in Kansas today are facing dangers that once would have been considered unthinkable," U.S. Attorney Barry Grissom said in a statement. "Fighting the rising tide of child exploitation is as important as anything we do as federal prosecutors."
