This past Friday at about 5 p.m., Lawrence police received a tip that someone had posted a baby for sale on Craigslist, asking $300 or best offer.

The price alone should have been a clue that it was all a trick. Even in this economy and even with a badly damaged baby, you can chop the kid up, sell the individual parts and still raise way more than $300. Just selling the kidneys would double that amount.

But, cops being cops, had to investigate. If some meth heads were actually selling their kid, the department would look pretty dumb when the baby's body turned up in a cornfield somewhere.

Authorities have yet to find who posted the fake ad, which is no longer online. But if they do, they say charges could be filed. So if you're reading this and last Friday you and your buddies were getting drunk in your dorm and playing on Craigslist, watch your back.
