Roger Ebert is not happy about Robert Butler's layoff

Robert Ebert is an American institution. He has brought film criticism into the mainstream, he has won a Pulitzer and, in the words of Forbes magazine, he is perhaps the most important film pundit in the country.

So how did the venerable wordsmith express his reaction to the Star downsizing its longtime film critic using only 140 characters or less?

"Film critic Bob Butler downsized at Kansas City Star after 41 years. Damn"

That's why Ebert has a Pulitzer. He only says what's necessary. Well played, good sir.

I'll be honest and say that Butler I was never a big fan of. He was a typical critic, giving the big Hollywood blockbusters low ratings and the Oscar worthy films high ratings. I do btw, hate seeing him get laid off. Ps: Shawn Edwards is the worst critic alive. Roger Ebert is probably the most accurate and precise critic there is. And that is why people still love him. (And hate Shawn Edwards...)

Oops. My bad. Was talking about the wrong person. Was talking about Robert Trussell.

Bob Butler was not a very diverse critic - only covering the same performers, same theaters, and same production companies all the time.  There is so much more happening the the Kansas City arts community, but you would never know it because he never seemed open to promoting anything outside his friends.
I hate to see the newspaper make this call, but can't say as though I don't feel it a little justified.

I've definitely had my share of what-the-fuck-moments with Ebert. That four-star review for Knowing, for instance. But what I like about him is that even when I disagree with him he makes his points in a way that I can understand where he's coming from.

Now if you want a total asshole film critic worth hating check out Armond White.

I've hated that dude ever since I saw Love and death in Long Island based upon his review and a lack of better choices at the cinema.Yeah,it may have John Hurt, but it also stars Jason Priestly. At least with Edwards, you know he's full of shit.
