Star: KCMO getting Google ultra high-speed broadband, too

Posted By on Tue, May 17, 2011 at 9:02 AM

Update:
It's official. Google Fiber is coming to KCMO, too. Watch the video featuring Mayor Sly James and others above.

Original Story: KCK isn't a special snowflake after all. Kansas City, Missouri, will also get in on Google's super-fast Internet connections, according to the Star.

Mayor Sly James is expected to make the announcement at Union Station today (or, as his press release said, "a significant economic development initiative for the City of Kansas

City").

There's more good news for KCMO: The city will get Google fiber in 2012, just like KCK.

In March, Google announced that KCK had beat out nearly 1,100 other communities to get

Google's ultra high-speed broadband. Google's broadband will allow for upload and download speeds of 1 gigabyte per second -- more than 20 to 100 times today's broadband speeds.

Count this as a win for KCMO.
