Yesterday, we told you how Kansas state Rep. Pete DeGraaf compared planning for the possibility of a rape pregnancy with special "abortion only" health insurance to keeping a spare tire in your trunk in case of a flat. Because let's face it, ladies, it's going to happen.
Yet many of you thought this analogy was insensitive, stupid and demeaning to rape victims. Around 28,000 of you, the last time I checked Facebook. Now there's a way to express your anger at DeGraaf's remarks (and voting record) while promoting women's rights. This morning, the Kansas chapter of the National Organization for Women launched a campaign to send DeGraaf spare tires.
You can find details on the Kansas Now site as well as this Facebook group. Unfortunately, it doesn't look like it's a real steel and rubber tire but rather a model replica.
"For every $5 that Kansas NOW receives, we will buy and personally deliver a model car size 'spare' tire to Representative DeGraaf," the Kansas Now page says.
You can donate to the cause online via Paypal at www.ksnow.org by clicking the "You Can Help" tab. Or you can mail a check with the word "Tired!" in the memo line to Kansas NOW, P.O. Box 1860, Wichita, KS 67201.
And remember, if you disagree with DeGraaf's idea that women should have separate rape and abortion coverage, don't be afraid to express yourself by contacting him through the information listed on his representative profile (which he lists online, so the good people of Kansas can reach him and he can do his job as an elected official). There's his office number (785-296-7693), home phone (316-777-0715) and e-mail (pete.degraaf@house.ks.gov). Just keep it civil. You're better than that (although we're not).

"MOM-4-NONSENSICAL- GOOGLE -REGURGETATED- INFO"
this post originated , when a public offical made several blunders on a touchy topic, abortion.
"Kansas legislators approved a ban on insurance companies offering abortion coverage as part of their general health plans. The one exception: when a woman's life is at risk".
i felt ,when a woman was raped, should have been the other exception.
DeGraaf, also called for banning coverage for abortions of rape pregnancies. then took it a step further "ABORTION ONLY POLICIES". in essence, a woman, just as he , prepares himself for a flat tire, should prepare for rape.
1in a million , may have a warm fuzzy feeling, that a child ,well a zygocyte ,grows within, even though raped.
"insensitivity" to the raped woman, to now be forced, under Pete DeGraaf`s plan(unless she has rape insurance) to bring to term, a zygote, a child after 8-10 weeks into the process, the reminder of a rape, even though having feelings of get "this thing" out of me, did not even enter your thought processes. your focus went here :
"Insensitive to rape victims? For sure. But how about the "insensitivity" to the baby being butchered? He's really saying that the baby is nothing more than a worthless piece of obligation one must now "deal with" at the end of a long, hard day. Yes, and it was the baby's fault that men commit these heinous acts. Kill it.
WHAT DA PHUCK,,,,,,,,,,,,, DAAHHHHHHHHHHH.
Then in posts after you showed more ignorance ,wriggling, squirming and googleing info, to change words and phrases to come back here and spew, to somehow seem knowledgeable. your view is warped, nonsensical and 10th gradish.
maybe you can tell me what grade you conjugated the verb in this case "to be" for here is a clip from a post of yours corrected.
"Secondly, had you finished 5th grade, as that "were" when we studied the Constitution heavily, you would have noticed something.
i bet hes begging a Spare Tire business and this is all a conspiracy!!! O_O
First of all, that is not true. Many pregnancies do NOT turn into babies; only the potential to become a human baby is there. Second, by your logic, blueprints and broken ground are the same as a house. Due to the collapse of the housing market around where I live, many potential homes lay in disrepair, with only the foundations built before they were abandoned. While they all had the potential to become houses, many did not. My point: Having the potential to become a human and actually being human are entirely different things.
First of all, Lubaron (whatever that is), your incorrect usage of punctuation clearly delineates which of us was unable to finish school.
Secondly, had you finished 5th grade, as that was when we studied the Constitution heavily, you would have noticed something. This "nonsensical concept" you term my defense of life, you will undoubtedly find the Founding documents make the same radical, "nonsensical" claim. Oh, no, not just the RIGHT to life to you and to I, but to----drumroll, please, our posterity. Now grab a dictionary...I'll wait... That is referring to all of your future offspring through your heritage...FOREVER. So, the Founding Fathers said that we should uphold, not only our right to Life, Liberty, and Happiness, but the right of our posterity to the same. And, yet, under the false guise of "Liberty" we have successfully snuffed out that promise to over 50 million of our posterity.
You know what, forget the dictionary. Grab a Bible. You are deceived.
Well, yes it is,actually. That "group of cells" as you say will only turn into one thing-and that would be? A baby. No matter how much people want to deny it- a pregnancy even one day in "births" the same result eventually. Having said that, your argument doesn't hold water because no woman would find out she was pregnant within only a few days after a rape. The earliest she could find out (meaning the hormone would show up either by blood or urine) would be AFTER the precious heart has already started beating. And that's a fact that the world hates to deal with. You are stopping an actively beating heart and a rapidly developing brain. Facts, schmacts, eh?
How's that fer a 10th grade edumacation?
what is your point? should your mother , have had sex with a college professor to? for your post seemed , awfully ,DIMWITTED, in this context.
Shouldn't have to wait until every single politician is somehow touched by sexual violence. Leadership guided by empathy and compassion (which I somehow thought were valued by Christian ministers) has become extinct.
What a horrible idiot!
And he calls himself a teaching Christian!
He needs to be raped by a gorilla!
maybe his mother should have planned ahead and had him,,, for a college professor. ie ,, he would have not been born a DUMMY.
Or planned ahead knowing he would be in the public eye, and got a hair stylist , optometrist and dentist, so i would not be REPULSED , looking at him.
just wait untill someone (got forbid) rapes his wife, childen or someone he actually cares about...
Pete DeGraaf = @$$#0l3
Some get it, and those who don't, have no intention to.
This is a ridiculous campaign and it does absolutely nothing to inform this benighted creature that in belittling the trauma of sexual violence he is essentially denying the humanity of all women. Playing games with model toys is not a mature or reasoned response.
Eh. I think the model tires aspect is just something to make it a little more fun - a good fundraising hook for NOW - but really not all that important in and of itself. And I don't begrudge NOW for trying to get extra cash, since every single group in the country fundraises. That part that could make a difference is that it's funding opposition to the measures DeGraaf is voting for.
Uh, sorry, but sending him a bunch of model-car-sized spare tires isn't going to do anything but humiliate the senders for thinking they are making a difference. Would you be disturbed, insulted, or change your mind on an issue if someone did that to you? No. You'd laugh it off and dismiss the actions of a bunch of small thinkers and resolve to be even more of an ass to get back at them. This man deserves something much worse than a bunch of free model car tires. How is this sending any kind of message other than 'we like wasting our own time'?
A flat tire is INCONVENIENT at best..... not LIFE THREATENING and PAINFUL and EMOTIONALLY DEVASTATING as RAPE is Compounded with the ETHICAL aspects of making an Abortion choice...or THE LIFE CHANGING aspects of having a child and all the real day to day responsibilities of that. Financial, physical, emotional..etc..
I believe Mr DeGraaf has SKIPPED a few chapters in his Bible.....PRAY for HIM and all Women who may have to live by "his" ethics.... and their children. and his Wife if he's married.
Mr. DeGraaf, If you were raped and given herpes, you would have something you would not want and you would want to get rid of it right! So if a woman is raped she wouldn't want the kid that was given to her in a violent way, right! You need to be impeached, you bible thumping Christian lunatic! This is why I moved to Europe to get away from these right wing morons!
a group of cells a day or a week after a rape is not a baby.
Insensitive to rape victims? For sure. But how about the "insensitivity" to the baby being butchered? He's really saying that the baby is nothing more than a worthless piece of obligation one must now "deal with" at the end of a long, hard day. Yes, and it was the baby's fault that men commit these heinous acts. Kill it.
for the GOP right wing Christian Birth-Taliban, Women are just cows, supposed to breed and breed, and breed. All protections to the unborn foetus, and then to the rich.
It takes money to vote him out of office...Just sent in 20. Use it ladies, who is this man to tell me what i should have done after my rape
Love the Democratic Party - however, they equivocate too much on this issue themselves. They want to have it both ways and I don't think basic womens' rights can be debated....
You do not have the common sense or the empathy to be a governmental representative. do you understand it took a woman to give birth to you? Are you just a sadist or just plain insensitively stupid! How dare you comparing abortion to a flat tire. Too bad we don't have waterboarding legal in the US, because I'd volunteer to do the "great deed" to you, just like your other party affiliates did.
You, sir, will have a special place in Hell.
Wrote him this afternoon to his email! I told him I hope his spare is flat and cell phone has no service out in the middle of nowhere sometime. Said some other things as well.
then why not castrate all men, because they Might commit a rape...we really elect and re-elect these stupid people?
Can I shove the tire up his manhole? Does he have insurance for that? I bet he does, seeing how he plans ahead so well and all.
Being sexually assaulted and getting pregnant as a result have nothing to with how well you take care of your own health. That sounds as insensitive as DeGraaf himself.
People should never forget that real health depends how well you take care of yourself and not what health insurance you carry but I agree health insurance is important for every one. Search "Penny Health Insurance" or online for dollar a day insurance plans.
Ok how close does this bozo live to Joplin? Maybe the rapture came after this idiot instead.
The thing I like about it is that NOW will (hopefully) raise some money out of the controversy. Women's rights - and definitely abortion rights - have been taking a beating in Kansas for a while now. Yes, getting a bunch of model tires in the mail probably won't hurt Pete that much - beyond sending him a message that a lot of people don't agree with him, which you could make a case for being important in and of itself. But the people who don't agree with DeGraaf probably also want to support the organizations fighting against the measures he's backing. And part of what NOW does is supporting candidates to run against guys like him.
