Yesterday, we told you how Kansas state Rep. Pete DeGraaf compared planning for the possibility of a rape pregnancy with special "abortion only" health insurance to keeping a spare tire in your trunk in case of a flat. Because let's face it, ladies, it's going to happen.
Yet many of you thought this analogy was insensitive, stupid and demeaning to rape victims. Around 28,000 of you, the last time I checked Facebook. Now there's a way to express your anger at DeGraaf's remarks (and voting record) while promoting women's rights. This morning, the Kansas chapter of the National Organization for Women launched a campaign to send DeGraaf spare tires.
You can find details on the Kansas Now site as well as this Facebook group. Unfortunately, it doesn't look like it's a real steel and rubber tire but rather a model replica.
"For every $5 that Kansas NOW receives, we will buy and personally deliver a model car size 'spare' tire to Representative DeGraaf," the Kansas Now page says.
You can donate to the cause online via Paypal at www.ksnow.org by clicking the "You Can Help" tab. Or you can mail a check with the word "Tired!" in the memo line to Kansas NOW, P.O. Box 1860, Wichita, KS 67201.
And remember, if you disagree with DeGraaf's idea that women should have separate rape and abortion coverage, don't be afraid to express yourself by contacting him through the information listed on his representative profile (which he lists online, so the good people of Kansas can reach him and he can do his job as an elected official). There's his office number (785-296-7693), home phone (316-777-0715) and e-mail (pete.degraaf@house.ks.gov). Just keep it civil. You're better than that (although we're not).
