A Kansas City sportswriter apparently refused to accommodate the makers of a movie and may end up in the film as a result.
The Twitter page of a baseball writer in Chicago indicates that Dick Kaegel, who covers the Royals for MLB.com, would not give up his seat in the press box while a scene in Moneyball was being shot during a game in Oakland last year. Based on the book by Michael Lewis, Moneyball stars Brad Pitt as A's general manager Billy Beane, who built a winner by taking a more empirical approach to talent evaluation.
Doug Padilla, who covers the White Sox for ESPN Chicago, sent out this tweet last night:
Moneyball comes out 09/23. When filming in press box at OAK last year one KC reporter refused to move so they had to put him in the shot.Another ESPN Chicago writer asked Padilla if the refused-to-budger was Kaegel or Bob Dutton, who covers the Royals for The Kansas City Star, which was Kaegel's old job. Padilla replied:
It's vet Dick Kaegel. Hope his movie debut isn't left on cutting room floor.See, Kaegel can't be disturbed when he's performing heroic acts of sportswriting, such as the time he predicted the 2010 Royals would win the division.
