The questionable behavior of Missouri state Sen. Brian Nieves (R-the Fightin' 26th) is now the subject of an ethics complaint and a civil lawsuit.
A political operative who complained to police that Nieves threw him up against a wall, head-butted him and threatened his life last year has filed a lawsuit in Franklin County. Shawn Bell accuses Nieves of false imprisonment, assault and inflicting emotional distress. Bell's suit comes on the heels of an ethics complaint that three teachers have lodged after a confrontational visit with Nieves at the state Capitol in May.
The fun began after the August primary. Bell worked for a candidate who lost the Republican nomination to Nieves. Bell told police that he went to Nieves' campaign headquarters to congratulate a friend on the outcome of the race.
Nieves, however, was not in the mood for intra-party sportsmanship. "Hey, you little fuck," Nieves said when he saw Bell, according to the police report. Nieves, Bell said, took him by the shirt and pushed him against a wall. Bell said he feared for his life when Nieves pulled a gun out of his pocket and set it on the table.
The "meeting" ended after Bell apologized to Nieves' wife, Julie, on the phone for a rumor that was spread during the campaign. The prosecutor decided not to bring charges.
The retired teachers complained that Nieves bullied them when they went to his office in Jeff City in May. Nieves was angry about a letter that one of the teachers, Tom Smith, had written to Nieves' hometown paper, the Washington Missourian. Smith wrote a second letter about the meeting, stating that he received "20 minutes of Mr. Nieves shouting at the top of his lungs, his very own 'hip-hop' scatological rant."
Nieves countered with his own letter to the newspaper. In his version of events, Smith was an "intimidatingly large thug" with "sneering, evil eyes" who had put his family in jeopardy. Nieves was outraged that Smith's original letter had stated the dates that Nieves would be attending a conference in Cincinnati hosted by a conservative think tank.

What's scary is just how many nut jobs like this d-bag are out there. For example, my SATF, gun toating, don't tread on me, psycho brother-in-laws. Some day, one of these nut bags will do something that will shock us all, and then maybe some sanity will return. Unfortunately, it is human nature to be reactive, so someone will probably have to be seriously injured or worse before anyone does anything about it. "But officer, my public, my fellow teabaggers, I was justified. He wasn't white, and he talked to me. What was I supposed to do? We feared for our lives because everyone who isn't a scared twit like me is trying to kill me and my family."
I guess the same could be said for the uber-liberal crowd. You all do some pretty scary stuff too.
It's all about paranoia. What's fun about paranoia? Well, we who recognize your weaknesses can play you like a fiddle. You make yourself so vulnerable, all the while, you think you are making yourself just the opposite.
