UPDATE (July 1): The victim of the homicide in Sanford Brown Plaza park has been officially identified as 24-year-old Paul Nelson of Kansas City, Missouri.
Original Story (June 30): A man shot to death Wednesday night in Sanford Brown Plaza park is Kansas City, Missouri's 49th homicide victim of 2011.
Police were called to a shooting near 37th and Park around 11:25 p.m. The call was later updated to the sound of shots fired and a shooting at Linwood and Park. Officers found the victim, described as a black man in his 20s, dead from a gunshot wound.
The victim's name hasn't been released, but Fox 4 identified the victim as 24-year-old Paul Nelson. The TV station reported that Nelson and his father were sitting on a park bench and talking when a group of young men opened fire on them.
Nelson was a father of two, with his youngest born in March.
