Sad news. Blair Shanahan Lane, the 11-year-old girl struck in the neck by a stray bullet on the Fourth of July, died Tuesday around 5 p.m.
Police responded to a call about a girl being injured in a fireworks accident at 43rd and Pitman around 9:15 p.m. July 4. But this wasn't a fireworks accident. Officers figured out that Lane had been struck by a bullet, and she was rushed to a hospital.
Lane's injuries were critical. She is now Kansas City, Missouri's 50th homicide victim of 2011.
Police say they're still looking for suspects. The Star reported that police canvassed nearby apartment complexes on Monday after figuring out that several people were firing guns there at the time Lane was shot.

Pitch, this article really illustrates how insensitive your homicide count is. People are not numbers. The story is about a horrible tragedy, and hopefully what we as a community can learn to help prevent this from reoccurring. The story is not that there have been fifty homicides, and number fifty happens to be young Blair. Get a heart.
