Kemper Arena is one step closer to being a forgotten relic. News broke this morning that the American Royal Rodeo is leaving Kemper for the Sprint Center, according to KMBC ace reporter Mike Mahoney's blog. This is a huge blow for the West Bottoms.

"The change in venue from Kemper Arena is intended to bring new

excitement and greater attendance to this historic event," David Fowler, the chairman of the Royal's board of directors, said in a news

release.

"A principal

reason for moving the event to Sprint Center is the opportunity to

partner with AEG in bringing top-tier concert entertainment to close out

each evening Rodeo performance."

Top-tier concert entertainment such as Reba McEntire, who is scheduled to perform at the Sprint Center on October 29, the last night of the rodeo, which begins October 27.

I probably wasn't their target demographic to begin with, but being held at Kemper was the only thing that made the Royal appeal to me.  Just another local institution selling out it's neighborhood for the PnL

In September, David Martin wrote that the city still owes $11.9 million in bond payments for renovations at the arena, and it won't be paid off until 2016.

I thought the American Royal actually owned Kemper now... no? At the very least they've got their logo plastered all over it.
