Thirty years after the skywalk collapse, the Hyatt Crown Center is getting a new name.
NBC Action News reported that the Hyatt is being rebranded as the Sheraton Crown Center and will receive a "significant upgrade." The upgrade is mostly cosmetic: "a new front drive, overall lobby improvements and the brand's
signature guest experiences."
However, just days after the anniversary of the July 17, 1981, collapse that killed 114 people and ceremonies remembering those who died that night, we're still not any closer to a memorial.
Star's Mike Hendricks wrote a pretty decent column today urging the big shots with
the fat wallets to pony up for the tribute that, sadly, pathetically, isn't halfway to the $800,000 goal for a
memorial -- after three decades.
In January, Starwood Hotels & Resorts Worldwide Inc., which also runs the
Westin Crown Center, will begin managing the Hyatt Sheraton. They're promising to invest more than $18 million in both hotels.
Call the Hyatt whatever you want. Folks aren't going to forget the tragedy. And the victims deserve a memorial to make sure no one does.
