Sen. Claire McCaskill has had a busy week. First, she announced and tried to downplay some amendments to FEC filings from 2006. And now she's trying to sweet-talk members of Congress into going along with the debt deal proposed by the so-called Gang of Six. That should be a piece of cake.
But in far more entertaining McCaskill news, she also released her quarterly fundraising numbers last Friday, and they have some interesting nuggets, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch notes. In the past three months, McCaskill has racked up quite a bit of dough -- $1.3 million -- for her looming re-election battle. But what's more impressive than the amount of cash McCaskill brought in is who was cutting her checks. Turns out, Clairebear has some deep-pocketed and famous supporters.
The P-D reports that Eagles frontman Don Henley kicked in some cash, along with other music bigwigs including Warner Music Group CEO Edgar Bronfman Jr. and A & M Music's Jerry Moss. Hollywood hotshots Jeffrey Katzenberg and Steven Spielberg also sent her some cash.
Somewhat
strangely, Clairebear also is a favorite of NFL owners. Philadelphia
Eagles owner Jeffrey Lurie, the New York Giants' Steve Tisch, St. Louis Rams' Stan Kroenke and Minnesota Vikings' Zygi Wilf all donated to
McCaskill. Boxing promoter Don King also contributed, which seems
really unlikely, considering that King campaigned for George W. Bush in
2004 and once told Sports Illustrated: "Bush has unbelievable
reflexes; he can stick and move like a boxer." And he described him as
"aggression but with protection." That doesn't really sound like a
stance McCaskill would support, but, hey, money is money.
With
the fat roll she raised in the quarter, McCaskill appears to have put
herself into a strong position.
Sarah Steelman, who has announced a bid
to run against McCaskill, reportedly raised only $193,000 in the same
quarter. Steelman's rival, Republican Rep. Todd Akin, scrounged up
$511,000.
