Three guys and a Geo Metro couldn't pull off a copper theft.
Try as they might, three men in Independence couldn't win a Darwin Award this week when they tried to steal a power line. Police say they caught Anthony L. Laycock, Derek L. Rudroff and Louis C. Hauenschild ripping down a power line in order to strip the copper. The men allegedly scrapped an earlier attempt to steal the power line after it crossed another, causing it to arc.

Police discovered a line that was cut near U.S. Highway 40 and Valley View Road on Monday. The Kansas City Star reports that crafty Independence police officers staked out the position. On Tuesday, the would-be thieves returned and were arrested.

From KMBC:

Hauenschild said they hooked a Geo Metro to the cut line and tried to pull it down, but the line made contact with another line and arced, according to court records. Investigators said that Hauenschild told them they decided to leave before they were electrocuted. Laycock and Rudroff were taken into custody on Tuesday after they were spotted walking with flashlights in the area where the line was cut.
The damage the trio of morons caused was estimated to be $25,000. All three are facing attempted theft charges, The Star reports, and Hauenschild has an additional first-degree property damage count.
