Eric "Mean" Melin's best wasn't good enough to get out of the first round of the U.S. Air Guitar Championships in Chicago Saturday night. Melin, repping Kansas City and sporting a Freddie Mercury 'stache, replayed his bigger-than-life, 60-second invisible guitar jam to Queen's "Bohemian Rhapsody" that won him the KC regional.
Former World Champion Hot Lixx Hulahan, a notoriously tough-but-fair judge, scored Melin a 5.9 out of 6. But low-ball scores from the other two judges put the second round out of reach (via U.S. Air Guitar's Twitter: "Co-commissioner of USAG just dumped beer all over Ben Bowman for dissing Kansas City's MEAN MELIN"). Look for Melin to return to metal in 2012.
Chi-Town's Nordic Thunder won the crown -- and the air-guitar barbarian will represent the United States in the World Championships in Finland. It's an honor that Nordic Thunder earned (and deserved) after shredding Motley Crue's "Kickstart My Heart" and nearly wiping out a security guard and a stage light with a knee slide. He came up bloody and victorious. All hail the new king.
