Herbert wasn't thinking about the power the Clay County auditor wields when he wrote his Dune series. But the weasel who currently occupies the position is making the science-fiction writer's point just the same.
After weeks of dodging NBC Action News' Russ Ptacek, William Norris, the 27-year-old auditor of Clay County, has acknowledged a prior felony conviction. Norris admitted to The Kansas City Star that he pleaded guilty in 2006 to a felony count of aggravated stalking in Grundy County, Missouri.
Norris says he received a suspended sentence and was placed on probation for five years. He told the Star's Glenn E. Rice that he requested and received an early release from probation.
The case is now sealed, but Norris faces the potential that he could be removed from office. State law says felony convictions disqualify individuals from holding elected office. Ptacek reported last night that the Clay County Prosecutor's Office has opened an investigation. Ptacek's full piece on Norris is scheduled to be broadcast on Wednesday.
Norris' apparent inability to handle a breakup with a girlfriend when he was 20 isn't his only issue. Before the Republican primary last August, the Star cast doubt on Norris' claims that he was a graduate of William Jewell College and a CPA. (Turns out, he's neither.) Ptacek is reporting that Norris embellished his work record.
In wounded-animal mode, Norris has filed a restraining order against Ptacek, according to Tony's Kansas City.
More than 35,000 residents of Clay County voted for Norris last November. Every one of them should feel embarrassed today.

I am the mother of one his victims & NOT Tosha. He has not just one felony plea but several (my daughter & us brought about 2 of them!). It is not about one relationship that soured as Mr Norris would have you believe. This man is a sociopath! He harassed, stalked, manipulated & psychologically tortured MANY girls, covering multiple years!!! He is also currently a prime suspect & the focus of an investigation by a KC area cyber crimes unit. So much for people changing! Let's not forget that he lied on an official legal document when he declared himself a candidate. He knew he plead guilty to several felonies yet he perjured himself just the same! This leopard has NOT changed his spots!! If anything, he's become even more brazen! A classic sign of a sociopath that has not been truly held accountable!!

As for Mo Statute 115.405 the sworn declaration that I signed has to do with Statute 115.350 which in regard to my situation is unconstitutional so everyone can think whatever they want to think. I am smart enough to read, understand, and interpret the laws as they are written and I knew full well what I was doing when I signed that piece of paper.

David, you need to do some research before you go shooting off on your blog. Your assignment is to, right now, study up on your US Constitution (Ex post facto laws), Article I, sections 9 and 10. Now, compare the dates of William Norris's felony plea with the date the state law was passed and signed. It's actually pretty simple, in terms of legal jargon. No one can do anything about it. Just ask the child molesters with whom the MO Supreme Court sided with 4-3...they're handing out candy to kids on Halloween thanks to Article I, section 9.

Lets not forget the reading of some of the court documents where the Judge stated that he understood full well that this was partially Ms. Altes' fault and that with as much info was involved with the case there could have been no way that Mr. Norris could have done everything on his own.
Lets talk about 3 reasons why William J. Norris is still and will be the Clay County Auditor for the next 3.5 years.
#1. The people spoke. It was a free and fair election. No dead folks voted like in Chicago IL and there was no voter fraud reported. The voters were counted and Norris beat 2 of the establishments candidates.
#2. Article 1 section 13 of the Missouri Constitution strictly forbids laws that are retroactive in nature. It is true there is a statue that states "No person shall qualify to be a candidate for public office if they have plead guilty to a felony in the state of MO". Under normal circumstances this would throw Norris out of office. EXCEPT for this law was not enacted until 1/1/2007. Norris plead guilty to his felony in 2006, thus making this law retrospective in nature and therefore unconstitutional. Anyone who says otherwise is a moron.
#3. The kid is smart. Boarderline brilliant and I have never once met the man nor do I know him from an online presence or etc... I know him only by what I have read online by liberal media outlets... The guy came in, unheard of by most, threw his name in the hat, campaigned his ass off, beat an established supported financially rich 30yr business man and 30yr CPA candidate in Jay Jones, THEN came in and beat Sheila Ernzen who has been appointed to more offices than God himself in Clay County. Brilliant..Absolutely brilliant. Did he lie about his education? Maybe. Did he lie about being a CPA? Maybe.. Did he get elected? Yes he did.. Brilliant. $260k THOUSAND dollars in the bank over 4 years plus benefits, retirement, flexible schedule etc..etc.. etc..
It is absolutely irrelevant that he ever had relationships with girls in the past that ended badly. It is also beside the point that the man may or may not have held nudie pics of said women. If you don't want your naked ass posted online, dont take the pictures ladies.. How does this effect him doing his job as Auditor? It doesn't.
So good luck to Mr. Norris and all of the other recently elected Clay County officials. Anyone would be better than Edward Quick and Sheila Ernzen and that is a fact, Jack.
Mr. Barnett- it is easy for you to say that news reporters or citizens should be persistent but the cases against Norris were in fact sealed cases. Only victims in the cases (or Norris himself) would have access to the records under Missouri statute... It takes courage for a victim to go public and develop a "new" case against this man in order to inform the public who chose bot to listen to the warnings already given!

We have a Presiding Commissioner elected last November who has never taken office but can't be kicked out because the Missouri Supreme Court won't listen to the case. Just because you are a felon doesn't mean you are kicked out of office... Check it out!

The way I read this article, the primary point was the felony conviction, which apparently was not reported prior to the election. Unfortunately, uninformed citizens voting a straight party ticket put this guy in office. Even though Norris registered as a Republican and won the primary, the Clay County Republican Central Committee refused to endorse Norris before the election due to his lack of honesty. Yet Norris won with about the same percentage of the vote as the other "Republicans" on the ballot. It's fine to vote for your preferred party, but better to be informed and vote for the best candidate.
Hindsight is 20/20. Why didn't you and The Pitch reveal this news BEFORE the election?
Any reporter who failed to uncover these basic facts during an campaign cycle should be embarrassed. (By the way, I vote straight Democratic ticket.)
