Cops arrest 13 in public-sex sting at city parks

The Internet has made it easier for people to find sex partners. But for some men hoping to form an immediate and temporary coupling, public parks remain a go-to destination.

Kansas City police arrested 13 men on suspicion of indecent exposure and other sex-related misdemeanors in undercover stings at Minor Park and Blue River Park in south Kansas City, according to NBC Action News. The reporter, Christina Medina, spoke to members of a remote-control helicopter club who "share" the park with men who like to cruise. One member of the club says his 13-year-old son asked him why so many cars were driving in circles.

Cops who work in the city's vice unit emphasize that the stings are about public sex, not gay sex. Former Pitch staff writer Nadia Pflaum spent time with the vice unit in 2009. The police who work as decoys, she learned, try to look available -- but not too available. A "master of decoy duty" was described thusly:

The detective's advantage might come from what seems like a bottomless well of patience -- nothing says "cop" like overeagerness. It could also be his frame, which is a little on the doughy side, or his lack of a telltale buzz cut. Today, he's back in the woods, waiting for another mark.

The rules are pretty simple: Decoys don't have to admit that they're cops if asked. In the woods, [the undercover officer] can do almost anything, short of engaging in illegal activities himself without straying into entrapment. (Unzipping his own pants, for instance, is off-limits. But he can ask to see another man's penis.)

The story also noted that indecent exposure is not treated as harshly as prostitution-related offenses.

We had a "ranger" watch us have a three-way one day at a park. He was sitting in his truck with binoculars watching us. When we were finishing up, he got out of his truck and came over to us to "scold" us and told us that "he didn't care what type of activity we were into but keep it behind closed doors." YET, that didn't keep him from watching the whole event before he came over. Wonder how many times he masterbated in the truck before he came over? Hmmm?

They can say it is not about "gay" sex but it really is. I myself have seen male/female couples in the park in their cars having heavy petting sessions, kissing, hugging, etc... they are never pulled from their cars and threatened with arrest. I agree that men should not be having sex in the open for everyone to see, but they would be busted for hugging and kissing in open view, while a male/female couple wouldn't. Believe what you want. It is discrimination.

Oh that question is just waaaaaay to easy.

Murderers are by definition potentially dangerous people who often have access to some seriously dangerous weapons. On the other hand, a guy having sex in a park generally doesn't carry weapons (at least none that don't shrivel at the words "You're under arrest!").

Oh my! Did I just call cops pussies? Perish the thought! Some of them like pickle park patrol duties because it provides the with fresh j/o fantasies.

The issue is that it's happening in a public place.  Everyone wants to enjoy public parks, and by using them as a personal sexual playground they are creating an environment that is uncomfortable for families and children.

This isn't a 'victimless' crime.  The victims are the public who have to put up with unacceptable behavior on public property.

I'm all for people having fun with whoever they wish, but take it indoors to a private residence, hotel, or even an adult business if you can still find one in Missouri.

Know a couple that recently got busted for having sex in their pickup a block from their house on a suburban street. Surprised they didn't get busted the time they walked naked around the very big block one morning.

Again, why don't they focus on solving some murders?

It's about public sex, not about gay sex? I can't remember the last time I heard about a straight couple being thrown in jail for fooling around outside (and yes, straight couples sometimes do it.)

So if the cop wasn't there, nothing illegal would happen?

Why are they so worried that people might have sex in the woods? That's not protecting me from anything. What a waste of time and money.
