Kansas Gov. Sam Brownback will spend an hour in front of ABC's television cameras helping build a home for an Iraq war veteran living with post-traumatic stress disorder.
Brownback is volunteering for the Extreme Makeover: Home Edition build in Ottawa, Kansas. He'll be there for an hour, showing up at 5 p.m. A cynic (who, me?) might say it's a self-serving photo-op. But helping a war veteran in need, like Allen Hill, is an admirable move. Maybe even more so in this heat.
Brownback will probably miss out on the laying of the home's foundation, which starts this morning and is expected to wrap up by midafternoon. But he may be able to get in on putting up some walls or laying the floor of this "quiet home" for Hill, his wife and two children. You can help, too.
Even though hundreds of volunteers are expected, the builders need more help at 11 Wheatland Drive. They're looking for stucco installers, framers, trim carpenters, stone masons, siding installers, sheetrock labor and painters. They also need unskilled laborers. If you just want to gawk, you can do that, too. But not until Tuesday morning at 8.
Or you can open your wallet. The reality show is hosting a barbecue fundraiser at Forest Park (600 North Locust in Ottawa) Thursday from 6 to 9 p.m. Eight of the country's top 10 pitmasters will compete in a barbecue taste test put together by the Kansas City BBQ Society. Tickets cost $10 for adults and $5 for children under 12. The money goes to the Family Build Fund, which will help the Hill family maintain the home and property once Ty Pennington and friends leave town.
