The Kansas City Star reported that 22-year-old Kyle James caused a ruckus at Fran's Restaurant early Saturday morning, refusing to pay for food that he ordered (but didn't eat) and threatening the job of a cop who handcuffed him. James allegedly repeatedly asked the officer if he "knew who he was" and then dropped the bomb: He's the mayor's son. Uh, big fucking deal. Most people in this city don't know who you are — or care.
James didn't stop there. According to the Star, the officer, who was working off-duty but in-uniform, wrote in his report: “He told me he could have my job anytime he wanted. He told me that when I woke up tomorrow, he would have me fired. He advised he could buy and sell me whenever he wanted. He stated that he could buy the restaurant if he wanted.”
Doesn't sound like Kyle James has that power. His daddy released a statement, and you get the feeling that Sly isn't too happy: "My son is a 22-year-old young man who made a mistake. He is extremely embarrassed and very sorry for the entire incident."
Fran's manager declined to press charges against Kyle James, who walked away with a warning from police (reportedly his third warning for being disruptive). The poor manager picked up James' tab and told James that he'd be arrested for trespassing if he came back.
There's so much more in the officer's report (KMBC's Mike Mahoney has the docs on his blog). The officer reported smelling alcohol on Kyle James' breath. James was also cursing loudly at people in the restaurant. A table of two girls told the officer that James was harassing them. A waitress told the officer that James had fought with customers the Sunday before this disturbance. When James spotted two women come into the restaurant, he allegedly picked up one and kissed her. (James told the officer that it was cool because he knew the woman and they'd had sex before.)
James also told the officer that he was "hatin'" and being racist and interfering with his "swag" and "game." He allegedly slammed his silverware on the ground.
After James was cuffed and taken from the restaurant, he started talking shit to three guys waiting for a cab. Shit like this: "He told them that he'd 'fuck them like that sweet sixth-grade pussy on the playground.'" He told the guys to meet him at 39th and Troost and he'd "fuck them up."
James and two friends were told that they couldn't drive because they were too intoxicated. They were offered a cab, but they got into an argument with the driver. So they got out and James started yelling obscenities. The cops, showing a lot of patience (that I hope they'd extend to the rest of the city's citizens, not just a bratty rich kid who happens to be the mayor's son), told James to get into a cab and leave or he'd be arrested for disorderly conduct.
James and his friends got back into the cab, but they ended up next to an SUV, which was later seen leaving the scene at a high rate of speed. The cab was empty, so presumably the three ended the night behind the wheel. The police report says the cops couldn't get to their cars to stop the vehicle.
The report says James has caused problems in several Power & Light bars as well as establishments in Martini Corner.

I can see a lot of permissive parents are commenting here. Let's set the record straight on Kyle James: He IS NOT a kid. He's 22 & that's old enough to know better. He WILL NOT change unless & until he is FORCED to. Our prisons are FULL of miscreants who think society should bend to them instead of the other way around.
Kyle is well on his way to becoming just another KC hood rat. This is no way to start what is inarguably a privileged upbringing. Make the most of what you had Kyle. Make your parents proud & remember that in doing so, you make yourself proud. Pride is a good thing when used wisely.
Hopefully Kyle gets a grip soon & realizes he's just like everybody else. Sly's position as our Mayor will grant Kyle just so many times at the plate. So far, he's striking out & solidifying a general view of him as just another brat. Let's not add "criminal" to your list of monikers.
I've watched Kyle grow from a traffic-stopping beautiful kid into someone who I knew would be a problem. A word of advice to Kyle: Life will be awfully hard for you if you continue to act like a spoiled brat instead of a man. Yes, you are a man & you can no longer be shielded from the consequences of your bad behavior by virtue of the fact that you are our Mayor's son.
Don't besmirch your father's good name or the work he is trying to do for our City. Grow up.

Looks to me like he received special treatment. If it were the rest of us, the cops might have tolerated everything up to the incidents outside at which point we would have been arrested. This guy sounds like a Larry Johnson type POS. At least we'll some interesting stories to read for the next four years.
We don't know what happened when Sly James had the post incident discussion with Kyle, but hopefully with a proper "Attitude Adjustment" the boy really is "extremely embarrassed and very sorry for the entire incident." I know that as a father and Marine in the public eye myself the importance of bringing the young man in on a short leash!

Unfortunately the Pitch, the Star and other news outlets failed the city miserably in thoroughly investigating James. Everyone was so eager to get rid of The Funk they just handed over the keys to a liar and co-conspirator. Someone should be investigating James relationship with the executive director of the Genesis Academy in Kansas City.
