John Covington reportedly might reconsider if Airick West resigns.

You can add John Covington to the long list of former Kansas City, Missouri, school superintendents. Covington resigned Wednesday behind closed doors. He lasted about two years and four months.

Board member Arthur Benson also resigned. No word on why both said peace out to the district.

KMBC reported that an emergency school-board meeting is scheduled for noon today. The TV station also reported that there were reports of Covington butting heads with board president Airick West, possibly over a major construction project.

Fox 4 released a copy of Benson's resignation letter, in which he writes that Covington may be persuaded to stay if West resigns.

My Bias - I live outside the KC MO school district and have watched the downward spiral for the past 15 years. I don't personally have any friends with kids in the district, but am concerned with the welfare of the youth of this city.

That being said, with the large number of superintendents rolling through this district over the past 15 years... isn't it time we just maybe looked elsewhere for the problem? As someone stated the superintendents serve "at the discretion and mercy of the board".... maybe it's the board that is the problem.

It is amazing to me the superintendent is always to blame even now. Maybe the district needs a new board, or someone else to do the hiring. We have had several tried and proven superintendents who have been run off by this board. When will it end and someone wake up and correct the real issue?

Oh yeah, and Adubya, I hear Mel Gibson has some room on his ranch for people with your particular views. Research would be a wonderful thing on your part. Economics have more impact than race on these issues.

So since when does someone who serves at the direction and mercy of the board tell the board who has to leave in order for him to stay....he hasn't even gotten the schools acreditted yet.....he's using the board as a smoke screen to hide the fact that the state reports are going to show he has made zero progress ...... save for all the cuts he's made. BFD, adios go back where you came from.

So long, Covington and Benson. Keep Airick, whatever you do. He's cared for our scholars long before them, and will continue to care for them long after they leave.

The Kansas City Public School system died the day the government forced de-segregation. It has brought down the city with it...blighted neighborhood after blighted neighborhood.

Please, please someone dissolve the Kansas City school board. They have been contentious since I can't remember when..they are always at the bottom of disagreements...and have way too many outside voices in their ears. Each one has some ambition to promote. They have been disastrous!!
