KMBC Channel 9 reported the petition drive that aims to wipe out Kansas City's 29 cameras, which since going live in the spring of 2009 have generated $9.7 million for the city in 97,000 tickets ($3.1 million of that has gone to American Traffic Solutions, which has a year left on its contract with the city).
The arguments are the same: The city argues that red-light cameras reduce red-light running as well as accidents. The opposition (one of the leaders is Sean O'Toole) argues that voters should have a say in whether the cameras should continue. They also say the cameras violate people's constitutional rights, presuming guilt before innocence by offering little proof on who was actually driving the vehicle.
I tend to agree with the findings of Rajiv Shah, an adjunct professor at the University of Illinois-Chicago, who studied Chicago's use of the cameras, and his analysis found that collisions actually increase at intersections monitored by red-light cameras.
I've never believed the cameras were about public safety but about politicians with dollar signs in their eyes.

When are they going to do something useful like teach people how to go when the light turns green. Or don't pull out in front of a black Dodge and make him slow down so you can drive 10 mph under the limit and turn at the next intersection, because you might get your funking yuppie ass ran over just so I can have a good laugh. Oh, what about these Lance Armstrong idiots that decide ride a bike at rush hour everyday both morning and night on busy roads. No wonder there are so many Republican pols around here because we are saturated with dumb fucks.
Does this mean Tracy Ward will finally go away?
The only reason you would get hit running through a yellow light is if some Bozo coming the other way was running a red lite. A red lite that has been red since yours turned green.
The harm comes when you run a red lite.
Syncronize the lights so as to IMPROVE traffic flow instead trying to turn us all in to red light runners.
Studies found that the cameras have little impact on safety...in fact more folks tend to gun it at the yellow just to beat the red thereby causing accidents..the scam is for the company to make money...the amt the city puts out to purchase the camera and maintain them surpasses the revenue generated. I'm not talking from the perspective of an individual receiving the ticket but rather the clinician that has to treat the injuries. Let's place more of these cams in Overland Park as opposed to low income areas and see how popular these things are..while we're at it...let's put the cameras at every stop sign too (they have them up north).
