HuffPost identifies nine worst Westboro Baptist funeral protests

Arent they all worst?
  • Aren't they all "worst"?
The Huffington Post has come up with a list of the nine "worst" funeral protests by Westboro Baptist Church.

It's kind of a dumb exercise because, like a list of the worst Beatles songs, it suggests that the church does worthwhile things when it's not thanking God for AIDS and improvised explosive devices.

Still, it's good to be reminded that the church gained notoriety for protesting at the funeral of Matthew Shepard, the gay college student who was beaten to death in Wyoming in 1998.

After Shepard's murder, then President Bill Clinton urged Congress to expand the list of hate crimes to include crimes involving sexual orientation. Congress finally made it happen in 2009.

Westboro Baptist, meanwhile, continues to protest funerals. The Phelps clan announced last week that it planned to picket the funeral of Steve Jobs. Beating writers at The Onion to the punch, Margie Phelps used an iPhone to spread the word on Twitter. Alas, the funeral was private and conducted at an undisclosed location.
