Mizzou application to the SEC 'imminent', The New York Times reports

Miz ... SEC?
  • Miz ... SEC?
The University of Missouri's application to join the SEC is "imminent," The New York Times reported Monday.

The Times cited "a university official with direct knowledge of the situation" saying Mizzou's application was "inevitable and imminent." The process of withdrawing from the Big 12 and applying to the SEC is reportedly set to begin at a board of curators meeting Thursday and Friday at the University of Missouri-Kansas City. Kinda funny that the process will begin in the Missouri city that will be hurt most by the move.

The Times report says Mizzou expects “no problems” in getting enough votes to join the new conference.

Last week, interim Big 12 commissioner Chuck Neinas said he expected Mizzou to be competing in the Big 12 during the 2012-13 season. However, the Times report says Mizzou's move could happen as soon as next year.

Neinas told the Star that he told SEC commissioner Mike Slive to let him know if the SEC was sending Missouri an invitation. However, Slive “didn’t indicate one way or another” whether Mizzou would be invited.

If Mizzou goes, the candidates to join the Big 12 remain Louisville, West Virginia and BYU.

And this, coming out of KC, is exactly why we're leaving. The Tigers have never been fully appreciated there, only for the revenue we bring to the city when we bring our fans there. No more. We'll take our money to Knoxville, Gainesville, and Atlanta anyday. KC- such sore losers, as always. Maybe y'all should try winning the World Series at least once this millennium. Or hell, at least make the playoffs.

Unfortunately for us, Mizzou's responsibility is to the University, not Kansas City. The school is looking to add to its own revenue, not protect KC's revenue producers. Can you blame them?

You wouldn't turn down a raise at work just because someone in another division got laid off to free up the funds. It's the same principal.

Kansas City Missouri's loss of revenue "IF" the Tigers leave the Big 12 will be more then FIZZOU will gain annually by joining the SEC. The Big 12 Basketball Tourney brings in an estimated $14 million annually to the Kansas City Metro area, not to mention the annual Rivalry football game between KU and Missouri at Arrowhead Stadium and its added revenue.

All this, and the loss of some heated historical Big 8/12 rivalries that go back more then 100 yrs, doesnt seem logical to me. But then again, neither does their "fuzzy math" where an added $4-5 million dollars a yr to the University itself makes up the revenue that one of the States largest Cities stands to loose revenue, taxes (local, county AND state) and jobs over and above the loss of $14 million a yr.

And I am a KU fan, and would hate to see them go, but hey, if their reasoning is so poor, and their math so fuzzy, maybe they belong in a conference where 2 and 2 may actually equal 22 based on their logical standards........

Boo hoo mizzou....in KU's shadow in basketball & OU's shadow in football. I'd take my balls and go play somewhere else too........

Mizzou: We want out of the Big 12.
The rest of the Big 12: That makes two of us. Buy-bye.
