Missouri ballot push to legalize marijuana begins

Posted by Ben Palosaari on Tue, Nov 8, 2011 at 1:42 PM

Missouri could soon be The Smoke-Me State.
  • Missouri could soon be the Smoke-Me State.
Following Missouri's statewide war on synthetic pot, which saw a law passed to ban the products, the state is now potentially on its way to having the nation's most lax genuine-pot laws. The secretary of state's office announced on Monday that Show-Me Cannabis Regulation, a marijuana legalization advocacy group, has been granted permission to collect signatures for a pair of ballot initiatives that would make pot legal.

The petitions would legalize pot for everyone 21 and older, allow doctors to recommend marijuana use for medical purposes, release imprisoned Missourians convicted of nonviolent pot-related crimes, and pave the way for the state to tax $100 on every pound of pot. The group must collect signatures from 5 percent of the state's registered voters in six congressional districts in order for the question to appear on the 2012 ballot.

Despite the backlash on synthetic cannabinoids and the steep signature requirements, this might be the best time for legalization activists to strike. A recent Gallup poll shows that, for the first time, the majority of Americans support legalizing weed.

In other doobie news, the Columbia Daily Tribune reports that a citation for marijuana possession given to Gov. Jay Nixon's son, Wilson, a junior at Mizzou, has been dropped. An assistant city prosecutor told the paper, "The facts of the case were inadequate to support a charge beyond a reasonable doubt." The misdemeanor citation for possession of less than 35 grams of pot had been issued after police investigated a loud apartment party in Columbia and saw marijuana.

Legalize it, dont tax it!

We're taxed enough, already.

I have been reading these and just ran across someone that stated the only possible bad effect from weed is the smoking of it. I just wanted to clarify that the Journal of American Medical Association (JAMA), has concluded a 20 year study of over 5,000 men and women, http://jama.ama-assn.org/content/307/2/173

They "found NO evidence that increasing exposure to marijuana adversely affects pulmonary function.”

In fact, this 20 year study actually suggests that those who smoke had less incidence of cancer and that its effects were actually good on the users lungs!

Funny thing is, or not so funny, this study came out in January...how many of you had heard of it?

I am not on face book but isn't this something that should fill every page there since most people are on face book? And what about all of us starting to wear a green band on our arm everyday, or one of those rubber bracelets. Isn't there something that we can do to start making this more visual? And how many have talked about signing a petition, but haven't yet???? We need to take this seriously. A poster above mentioned how much the merchants have to loose and the money they will pour into keeping this illegal...we can't just sit around and be silent and passive we need to do something. The vote is going to be here before we know it...lets start today.

Lets start wearing some green and bring it up in conversations so that it isn't so 'scary' any more. Lets talk about it in our bible studies, at our lunch breaks at work, any where that we can. Lets make it a typical conversation topic that is talked about to the point that people no longer see pot as something to fear.

We all know thta the ganja plant and or smoking of the plant is illegal. Can any on point me in the direction of why.....Everywhere I go to look all I can find is what the effects are and what the penalties are. I think that if a glass of wine is how you spend your evening unwinding and your kids are taken care of ,then so be it, However ,I have self medicated for over 20 years and I have a clean track record, but I am a prisoner in my own country. I work hard and pay my bills,I built my house while under the influence of smoking pot , just wish my choice of relaxation could be considered . I have drank lots but end up with the cant do anything feeling the next day. Why make a problem out of something that is not a problem. I dont turn into the hulk when i smoke , how ever WE all become 10 feet tall and bullet proff with enough alchole. my opp is if you cant allow all 3 mood enhansers to be bought with care then the gov should have them all put on the insurance scam, no prescription no enjoyment because cigaretts and alchole is more abused than marijuan ever will be...thanks again straight up working joe

you all should read the legislation- read what this is actually going to do for Missouri.. try to get to a meeting- sign a petition- carry petitions for others to sign- spread the word- Missouri and the rest of the country needs this to happen. The economy needs it- tax revenues would skyrocket, farmers would make money from their land again instead of steadily losing their livelihoods season by season, police and other law enforcement agencies would be able to focus their resources on violent offenders and real crime... Not to mention that it cures cancer, helps relieve the symptoms of chemotherapy, relieves anxiety and insomnia and mile long list of other things... If the president can drink a vodka tonic in the Oval Office to relax in the evening, why can't I smoke a joint on my front porch? If a cancer patient can request a (highly addictive) morphine drip for the pain or a (also, highly addictive) valium for the stress, why can't they also ask for a THC drip or a ganja cookie that is not physically addictive and will make them feel better in more ways than one..?

I want my civil liberties.

imho

While I am certainly an advocate of legalizing, I'm not crazy about the idea of releasing people currently incarcerated for pot related crimes. It was a crime, and they knew it... the punishment should be as much for breaking a law as for whatever was actually done.

I have been arrested for a possession charge, and and can empathize with the people who are currently in trouble, but I made a conscious decision to break the law, and that law changing does not change that fact.

I am, however, a fan of lowering the penalty for anyone with over a year left on a sentence that is the result of a non-violent pot related crime.

The sad reality is the Government's "war on drugs' is actually a method of providing non violent offenders to a profit driven (privatized) prison system that uses them as slave labor to produce goods. it's a rapidly expanding manufacturing base in our nation which explains exactly why the USA alone houses 25% of the prisoner's of the entire planet. This number is likely to grow exponentially once the new clauses in the NDAA bill are implemented and the Government begins arresting and detaining people, completely free from the bother of the judicial system.

to Sarah S...Coke IS A beverage. Many would argue it has no redeeming nutritional value, and is in fact quite harmful to the human body, and should therefore be illegal. We trust adults AND children to choose whether or not to consume it without regulation. The proposed regulation of cannabis is intended to uphold freedom, giving adults who are suffering a choice, while protecting children who cannot by law give informed consent. It would follow that there is more concern for the health of children and young adults by the proponents of this effort, than there is by the FDA, that regulates Coke. I simply believe adults can make their own decisions about consumption of plant material that helps them, and hurts no one.

This will not pass now or even in the next 10, 15, 20 years. Missouri, especially the northwest part of Missouri, is bordered by a hardcore Republican based opposition in that of Kansas. With Kansas City being a very influential city in Missouri and Kansas, the mid-west is not progressive like the west coast has become and is still is a very conservative region. Most likely the midwestern states aside from Colorado (which was almost bankrupt) will be of the last if they ever even do legalize or decriminilize marijuana laws. Although I do disagree, the opinion of just one or even a thousand is not relevant to the whole. The best chance Missouri has is to get the message out and try to elect very radical state officials that will consider or even think about discussing the issues at hand. LEGALIZE IT!!!! If they were smart marijuana is proven less detrimental than alcohol and pescription drugs that addicts are abusing. Cannabis is harmful and a lot of tax revenue is being passed on!!

People. if you want this you must rise up. Like the guy said there are so many powerful special interests with money to oppose this it is crazy.

I have been watching the KC Star for any mention of this proposal - NADA. Not a whisper have I seen. I listened to some local talk radio (can't stand much of it) but they are endlessly talking about the failed KC school district. Don't they understand if we just let the marijuana-daddies out of jail the families can try to heal from the damage inflicted on them by the Federal prohibition? When the families can heal and stabilize, so too will learning improve for the little, fatherless children it has created. Mr Mayor that is the way to get the math scores out of the bottom 5th percentile. Let the daddies come home.

But the Mayor, all the establishment, the gov't bureacracies, the media (also part of the establishment) and the power brokers with vested interests in prohibition will stay silent about the proposal as long as there is no reason to talk about it. They want the old people to have as little time as possible to hear and consider all the arguments. They need a lot of knee-jerk "No's" in their early opinion polls so they can skew the sheep vote to their side.

People need to use social media and unconventional methods to raise the awareness. We need some flash mobs, or some demonstrations (please keep away all the Occupy people), or speeches, or some daily thing to capture the public imagination, and we need it now!

Folks, if is isn't growing then it is dying.

I have not smoked since college and I would like to debunk the idea that non potsmokers are any less capable or stupid than people who do not. I do not intend to put people off this cause. I am a supporter but skeptical that it will happen.

I just follow the money and predict that Missourians will vote this down:

(1) Marijuana prosecutions are the only thing keeping about half the law enforcement professionals in business right now. The operative word is "business." Not just government, but any business or industry that revolves around law enforcement will be hurt by lifting the marijuana prohibition; we just wouldn't need as much of that service in the future and that will cause general opposition from the business community.

(2) The failed marijuana prohibition has proven that marijuana is impossible to control, just as alcohol was impossible to control under Federal prohibition 80 years ago. Therefore, there is no real money in it for the drug companies. To the contrary, legal marijuana use probably would reduce the sale of pills and medicines for depression, pain, and others, thereby reducing drug company profits. Look for $100 million in anti-cannabis advertising from them if this gets on the ballot.

(3) The psycho-active element of marijuana use competes with ---- wait for it --- the Liquor Industry! States with legal marijuana have already noted significant reductions in the use of alcohol by young people. You can bet the Alcohol lobbyists will pour $50 million into anti-cannabis ads too. Not surprisingly the legal marijuana states have also experienced a drop in alcohol-related auto accidents and deaths. Sadly there is no deep-pocket lobby that will be pouring money into ads celebrating that cause.

(4) Yes there will be revenue if they could pass it and regulate it... revenue for the government. In case you haven't heard there are a lot of Missourians who think government should be smaller. They are not moved by anything that gives money to the government and might vote against it just for that alone. Do not underestimate how tight we Missourians can squeeze together our cheeks to keep from smelling the crap!

(5) If people really want this it is going to take a lot of time. It is not as easy as just posting "give me liberty" or "it never killed anyone" or "it is just a weed" on a web site. You are facing people who are powerful and dedicated, and have a lot of money and reasons to oppose this. Let's face it, with real people like us, TIME IS MONEY! People won't use their vacation time to go get signatures on petitions. They can't afford to donate a weeks pay to NORML. Get the picture?

Sorry this got to be so long. I am personally a long-time user but my time is past. This is for the future if you younger people can muster it up with all the social media and such, it will be a miracle to me.

Let mary jane fund our economy and not let thugs rule the streets. Marijuana was created to make a person calm. We could end a nuclear war, if the fools in charge would just smoke a joint. Any thing you can do i can do better. A person needs to know thier limits no matter what the drug involved. However it will change person to person. I could go on for days on how badly these people have been treated in the past. GIVE A MOTHER FUCKER SOME FOOD, A DRINK, and then just let them relax, we aren't causing any serious damage. I am uplifted when i smoke i say about 80% of the time. There are more serious issues at hand if you have ever worked for the govt. I think its the guilt that people feel that makes them turn the other way when purchaseing or smoking marijuana. Give it about 5 minutes and all is well. It really is the dumest shit to have it outlawed nation wide any way.

It's funny reading this stuff. There are people for both sides, and you all make good points. But, some of you have no idea what you are writing. Forget all the lies you've been told, most of the reason Marijuana is viewed as wrong is based on lies. Do you have any idea how much money the government spent from 88' to 2000 on the war on drugs? 42 billion... now tell me, is that worth it? what could that money have been used for? schools, needy families, the crumbling infastructure of this country, and so on. I know most of the complaints about this are based on faith alone, because the law says it's bad, does that mean that GOD views it the same?
Genesis 1:11 & :12

11

And God said, Let the earth bring forth grass, the herb yielding seed, and the fruit tree yielding fruit after his kind, whose seed is in itself, upon the earth: and it was so.

12

And the earth brought forth grass, and herb yielding seed after his kind, and the tree yielding fruit, whose seed was in itself, after his kind: and God saw that it was good.

So if all the Bible Belt folks would get over their self interpertations of GOD's will, and realize that this is a plant, which by your definition would've been created by GOD, and it grows from the EARTH that GOD created. He made it for us, to use as we see fit within the FREE WILL that GOD bistowed apon US.

It's time to start thinking for ourselves, to get back to what this country was founded on. Not the lies we are told in the news, NOT the lies of a dying government. If we don't do something soon for ourselves, there will be no money, there will be no food, there will be no SEED, there will be nothing but anachary. The United States will be a forgotten dream that died with the greed of a select few, that for some reason we voted in.

It's time to make a stand for what is right for US, not THEM. take a good hard look at what you have, do you want to die for it? When the lights go out, who will keep you safe? The police, the president, congress, the senate? NO, no they won't. They'll be eating caviar in their special shelters, waiting for us to kill eachother until it's safe for them to poke their heads out.

If you could trust a politician, they wouldn't be a politician. When they're not kissing babies, they're stealing thier lolly-pops. If this petition were to come to my house here in Missouri, I WILL sign it. I'm thinking of the PEOPLE, not MYSELF. I suggest you start doing the same.

And to those that say pot smokers make terrible employees, I'd like to point out that the founding fathers all grew it, smoked it, and created everything that you cling to as a defense. Good luck, I hope you think about what I've said here. If you say it's wrong, in a way, that's what you think of GOD. Maybe we should just go ahead and blow up the Earth, so nothing bad can get you and your babies. Screw what he created, and listen to the greed of lobbiests. Doing their will like good little SHEEP.

I have smoked daily for 43 years. I first smoked as a young Marine in Vietnam. It made me feel calm during times that were intense. I came home to Kansas City and never stopped medicating.

I went to a good college, had a good and rewarding career, long-term marriage, nice children, community involvement and service. I have lived a good life and been a good citizen. I can run three miles and have never had a serious illness.

But I commit a felony in Missouri every day that I possess more than 35 grams, which is just about every day.

It is wrong for my country to subject me to this risk and I hope the people of my State will stand up and agree.

Marijuana is not physically addicting but can be mentally addicting. These individuals who find it difficult to quit smoking "pot" would have difficulty quitting any drug. Therefore, should all drugs be illegal? Our society couldn't function if all drugs were illegal. Remember that prescription medications are drugs and some can offer highs to their users. I believe in freedom. Everyone anywhere should have the right to choose what to do with their own lives. Is government really done anything positive with the war on drugs? No they a have not. It is money wasted that could be used for much more important issues.

I have taken my time and read 25 comments on this page. Some have validity but some are just obtuse! Marijuana is not a killer. It is safer than both cigarettes and alcohol. The industry alone would bring in hundreds of millions of dollars to the state. Not even trying to imagine how many people will all of a sudden have a job to get by and pay the bills. 3 month growing cylces will allow the average joe to make an estimated 30k a year, which will in turn be spent usually within 30 miles of their home. This is a great way to help those who are jobless and are feeling there is no hoe left in the world. To the guy who smoked a "dub" a day, chances are you were smokin some straight bullshit. Please I urge you to help the cause. this will release a lot of people who are non-violent and were just caught up in a situation that shouldnt have happened int he first place. thank you all for your time and God Bless.

i am not here to call everyone who opposes marijuana ignorant but what everyone needs to know is that there is no significant argument why it should be illegal. 1 has anyone ever overdosed on weed? 2 does weed harm you at all besides lung function? 3 are we actually free if we are allowed to drink as much alcohol as we want but not be able to smoke a plant that has never contributed to any deaths or health problems? 4 finally if you still think that pot is bad mmkay and that it is comparable to hard drugs then watch the show curiosity, your body on drugs and tell me how pot really compares to meth and cocaine in a controlled environment overseen by doctors
i support the freedom to smoke what i want and that includes marijuana. regardless of how the collection of signatures goes i will still light up whenever the hell i want because im free and you people with all your goddamn rules cant take that away from me.

Ok, for everyone that is making posts about how detrimental weed is to people's health...using that logic, we should go back to the days of prohibition. There are SO many more health and societal problems related to alcohol abuse than smoking weed. Alcohol causes more deaths on our streets, highways and in homes than pot ever has. There is no "Don't smoke and drive" campaign because pot smoking isn't causing innocent deaths on our highways. Unlike alcohol, people don't smoke weed and want to beat their spouse or abuse their children. And I know what you're thinking...no, I don't smoke weed. I'm just stating plain facts.

so what if coke was able to cure your depression, make you lose weight, help you make it through cancer treatments.
should that be legalized too???
what about acid?
they are all drugs.. they all hurt your body.

they are not preventing it from being illegal because they dont like you, its because its bad.
and pot is really bad because the damage is slow, and many dumb pot heads like those of you here, refuse to believe its bad so nobody notices the damage it causes..

for anyone who thinks that pot is addictive and will lead to harder drugs you need to think about how the human brain works,,,if you have an addictive trait than it doesn't matter because you will always look for your high, look at people who eat to excess because they are unhappy or people that drink to forget about there problems, now alot of people eat just enough and drink just enough...why because they can control there lives and are not looking for ways to forget what is going on in there lives,i personally like pot and think it helps to relax me,now do i get crazy with it and get stoned....nooo because i get what i need from what i do..plus i dont do it daily just like if somebody drank everyday they would be called an alcoholic...so if you use anything to an extent on an everyday basis than you probly need help!

think of it this way switch alcohol and pot what if way back when they made pot illegal but instead alcohol was illegal people would grow up not thinking anything wrong of smoking pot but you could go to jail for possessing alcohol and alcohol and people who drink would be frowned upon just like the people who smoke pot now therefore all of you politically correct fucks would be saying the exact same things about alcohol if it were illegal we were brought up in a society where perspectives are very easily manipulated by our government and the media people its a fucking plant thats all it is no chemical alterations it just grows like that and making a plant illegal just for the satisfaction of the government getting what they want is immorally wrong make it legal theres nothing the government can do to stand in the way of the people we are missouri and we can do whatever the hell we want

breal - "pot smokers make terrible employees"

Did you measure this or is just your gut feeling?

By "measure" I mean identify users and non-users, performing comparable work, measure their performance in a con trolled, statistically significant way, then analyze the results.

Or is your conclusion just based on the performance of a couple of meth heads you hired to clear the weeds away from the tires on your house?

http://www.facebook.com/showmecanregulate is the Facebook page for the SMCR initiative. And you can check out KCNORML's Facebook page to find out when/where there are events that registered canvassers will be gathering signatures.

Here's one such event: http://www.facebook.com/events/20327237640…

But social media is definitely the best way to find out where KC canvassers are going to be.

plus, cannabis does help with other medical conditions other than cancer, for instance depression. What would a smart person rather use to treat depression, man made pills filled with god knows what or treat it using cannabis, a natural growing plant.
plants > man made shit

people, especially teens die from alcohol poisoning all the time. when was the last time you heard someone die from smoking too much weed?? never. go buy the roughest sand paper you can find and try to rub off all the ignorance all you negative nancy's have, and do some REAL research about Cannabis before overlooking the REAL positive aspects of this great PLANT that mother earth provided for us.

my main concern is for people who are not smokers, they do not deserve to be forced to be around it, many people's jobs require drug tests. are these people supposed to avoid bars, and hold their breath as they walk around the streets? who is to blame when people who don't smoke and are around it get a contact high? it seems like a whole lot of trouble to go through so that you stoners don't have to call 5 different friends to see who is good or not.

how in the hell would legalizing pot help us?? it would not stimulate the economy. its simple.. the majority of people who smoke pot live their lives paycheck to paycheck. so if people take a portion of their income and spend it on pot, that's simply money that would of have gone towards something else, which would still be taxable.
so unless the tax on marijuana was far greater than everything else, it wouldn't help us at all. the last thing we need to worry about is everybody having open access to pot. think of how many scum bag losers will move here if Missouri is the first state to legalize pot. the last thing we need is more drug dealers and thieves that are trying to traffic pot in and out of Missouri.
