A former occupier named Bill Shelton told KSHB Channel 41 that he could “stomach” only five nights at the Occupy Kansas City camp in Penn Valley Park due to all the drugs and sex.
Shelton, whom other occupiers recall working with and seeing at the site, told KSHB: “Allowing that to happen in front of children — and you can hear it going on in tents, you can hear it in the night and you can hear it in the daytime.”
Shelton added that he hopes Mayor Sly James shuts down the camp.
The problem with Shelton’s claims is that they aren’t backed by anyone else.
The Kansas City police, who make daily stops at the camp, haven’t made one arrest for drugs or prostitution at Occupy Kansas City.
“I must have been going 2 wrong rallies,” one protester wryly responded to the allegation on Twitter. “I haven’t been offered 1 prostitute or joint.”
That mirrors my experience. I spent a day at the camp for last week’s cover story and didn’t see anyone using or hooking.
Tyler Crane, an occupier who has mostly lived at the camp since it started on September 30, disputes Shelton’s claims.
“There’s no pimps here,” Crane says. “There’s no hos here. To me, that’s just laughable.
“He might have misinterpreted two people consensually hooking up,” adds Crane, who admits that sex does happen at the camp. “We don’t live in a Footloose community.”
Shelton’s sordid story of life in a supposed red-light district was just the latest headache for Occupy KC, which has dealt with freezing temperatures, heavy rain and an attack on its website. Shelton’s turn also was unexpected.
He appeared to be a committed member of the Occupy movement. Crane says: “He seemed like a really cool guy. He was helping organizing things, helping me do dishes. He genuinely seemed like he cared.”
If that were true at one point, it’s not anymore. Occupiers in other cities have posited that police and conservative activists have been infiltrating Occupy camps to discredit their protesters. If that has made some suspicious of Shelton, Crane is willing to give Shelton the benefit of the doubt.
“If he was intending to sabotage the group, why would he help us clean dishes? Why would he help us organize trash and pick the camp up?” Crane wonders. “I think he might just be a little misdirected.”

I found these allegations terribly familiar. DeJaVu!! Just returned recently from a two week stay with my son in San Francisco. While I was there I visited Occupy San Francisco several times. Went down one night from midnight to 3am when the call went out they needed people to show up to help prevent a "police occupation". The police did come by about 3am but called it off saying they were only doing a drill. However going online I found someone with a "script" almost identical to what is being said here. These people are plants. I imagine if you visited several occupy sites you would find at least one critic with this same script of sex and drugs and yada yada. Hang in there Occupiers--You are under their skin!!!!!

I am not the 1%, but I am on my way there and plan on making it. You know why? Because ANYONE can if they want to work hard enough for it. I am not saying there are not hard workers in the movements. In fact, many would take a job if offered. Then again, many dont want to work at all and are just plain ol rabble rousers, misfits, and malcontents.
I started something from broke and have now developed a nice small asset base. To each their own, find your own path and dont blame anyone else for you not making it. There will ALWAYS be something or someone to blame...just look at this administration. Blaming everyone else when the times are bad, and if something DOES happen that is good they want all the credit for it.
Now why arent they protesting the White House? Did not Obama promise to clean up wall st? What has he done? A phony and crony "financial reform" bill. These people need to wake up. Wall Street has its crooks. There are crooks from the very top, all the way down to the very bottom. I noticed there are some communists and socialists at these rallies. Well, you can replace capitalism with communism and guess what, you still have your 1%!! Wow amazing. The system changes, but the hearts of man does not. We have the best system out there. Not perfect, but worth dying for....and many have.
So why dont you occupiers clean up your act and image a little and stop making other people mad. I dont think KC has a problem, but what I am seeing in Oakland, LA, and NYC is just foul.
Sex and drugs near 31st and Main? Saints preserve us, I've never heard of such a thing... well, at least when it was a respectable neighborhood, about 1914. That neighborhood has been known for prostitution and dope-dealing for at least the last 40 years, notorious in fact, and the Liberty Memorial back in the 1980s had a bunch of creepy guys hanging around in cars doing ... nothing. It wasn't a very safe place to go back then, and it probably isn't now, either. As for prostitution in the camp, prostitutes would be more likely to work Crown Center than the camp site, because that's where the money is. Whores don't hang around with the unemployed, because the unemployed don't have much of what they're looking for - cash.
It's funny how anyone who says anything bad about OWS is immediately accused of being some kind of conspirator. As if it weren't possible for people to just disagree with them, or for OWS to legitimately make a mistake. That's a sure sign of arguing in bad faith.
Occupy has no credibility. Daily they break the law just being there without a permit. The people of this community should remember that Sly James and the Parks Dept. supports lawlessness at the next city election.
Why would he help with dishes and trash duty? Because that's the m.o. of agent provocateurs. The dark does not always lurk in the shadows... and the skewed media is in partnership with these saboteurs. When are you people going to start recognizing the agents among you and take back your power? the world is being "run" by a host of demonic energies that masquerade as the light. Become your own beneficent stewards of truth and justice...take the high road, and above all keep it clean and peaceful!
Also, occupy is volunteer work addressing a key problem in our social structure. Why are people out of work? Is it b/c there's no money? NO! Corporations are making record profits. Why is there no work then? B/c executive heads have moved 30% of our work force over seas to places where the people are even more apathetic and uneducated. STOP CORPORATE GREED!!!! A mission that should be acted on by all.
These comments are upsetting. I know the people that have worked hard to organize and motivate this campaign. They are honest and genuine people. How can you discredit an effort for positive change? Do you people even know how corporations are manipulating us right now? Will you stand on their side and aid in their oppression?
Occupy KC is an effort to raise awareness of why the whole community should be fighting for what's deserved by middle and lower class americans. Go there and discover why you should be a "responsible" citizen. Our government has toppled due to apathy. This criticsm is nothing but lazy people throwing away something good so they can keep their La-Z-Boy and tv dinner. Don't you realize you deserve more.
Not saying there is, but whatever shred of truth is in this article, it has nothing to do with the effort or purpose. People have habits. Occupy is a diverse community that doesn't discriminate. If someone brings a bad habit into a park, do you condemn the park, or that individual? Ravers are socialites. They go where people are. That has no correlation with Occupy's purpose. They're fighting for a better future for US. How can you be opposed to that?
stop occupying and go do some volunteer work. The people you work with may have a position for you. I volunteered as a cook for 6 yrs. I am a manager now. Get a grip and quit using this forum as a way to stay UNEMPLOYED TAKING UP SPACE!!
All I know is the fact that a whole lot of the current & former 'raver' community djs and scene people are down there / supporting it. Where they go, drugs & sex follow. In fact, it is probably the only reason they show up. I personally don't get it. If cops will bust up a party then why not that?
I think its safe to say that the entity most opposed to OWS planted the "sex & drugs" rumor.
