Kansas City loses Big 12 women's basketball tournament a year earlier than expected

Women first?
  • Women first?
It's hard to paint this as a "win" for Kansas City, Missouri. The Big 12 is moving the women's basketball tournament out of Kansas City a year early, the Star reported. In 2013, the tourney will be in Dallas. In 2014, it'll be played in Oklahoma City.

KC will hold the tournament for one more year (this coming March at Municipal Auditorium). The men's basketball tournament is still set for the Sprint Center through 2014.

"I would like to thank the Kansas City Sports Commission for accommodating our desire to separate the men's and women's basketball championships," interim commissioner Chuck Neinas said in a statement. "Kansas City continues to be a valuable partner of the Big 12."

“This isn’t something about Missouri going away,” Cindy Smith, director of national events for the Kansas City Sports Commission, told the Star. “This is about the women’s tournament standing on its own.”

Uh, I guess so. It's hard to see this as anything but the beginning of the fallout of Mizzou heading to the SEC. The Big 12 now doesn't have a member institution in Missouri. I can't imagine the league justifying holding its premiere basketball event in a state with no link. But I can (naively) hope.

Kansas City, Kansas, did score a win. The Big 12 will hold the women’s soccer tournament at Livestrong Sporting Park beginning in 2013. But that's KCK, not KCMO. And KCMO loses. Thanks again, Mizzou.

Mizzou is an embarrassment to college sports. They begged to be part of one conference, were denied, then begged to be part of another conference since they were the black sheep of the Big 12. This is nobody's fault but Mizzou's, stop blaming others for your actions. It's not the rest of the league's fault that you will have no rivalries and will have to travel 600 miles to your closest division opponent. It's not our fault that your students suck at attending games. Just ask English when he posted how bad the student attendance is. The CBE Class? Joke. All Mizzou has shown is that they have no loyalty and don't care about regional alliances and revenue. This is bad for fans. That extra money Mizzou thinks they're getting from the SEC? Forget it, think about how much will be wasted on travel. The Big 12 will have the last laugh when Mizzou comes asking to be part of the conference again after a failed attempt in the SEC.

Hard to blame MU for doing what is best for themselves.

The only folks left in the Big 12 have either not been asked to another conference of note or have been publicly humiliated by rejection. After MU got spurned by the Big 10 - the SEC was their best bet.

I don't think you can blame Mizzou for this. The women were stuck in Municipal auditorium a very unattractive venue with very low attendance. It was a bad match and needs to be ended.

The men suck all of the air out of the town.

Why would they not look for a better venue and a chance to gain support?

Thanks again Mizzou??? How about thanks again Texas??? If not for the greed of UT, Mizzou leaving the big 12 would have never been a consideration. Can't help but feel in 6 years, when this round robin begins again, and the conference implodes...Mizzou will have the last laugh.
