Missouri Lt. Gov. candidate Susan Montee's daughter and two sons were arrested after an altercation outside a bar in St. Joseph.

The St. Joseph News-Press reported that the Montee children were in St. Joe for Thanksgiving with their mother, former leader of the Missouri Democratic Party and former state auditor.

Police were reportedly called to break up an altercation outside a bar when they encountered Montee's children, who were celebrating a friend's 24th birthday.

Austin and Andrew Montee became separated from the girls and later received a call from their sister, Amanda, saying she had been assaulted. The Montee boys went to get their sister, who was trying to talk to the officers. A crowd of about 30 people had gathered on the sidewalks and in the street to see an ongoing altercation, the News-Press reported. However, officers weren't listening to Amanda, 25, and told her to leave. She wouldn't and was arrested for disorderly conduct.

Her brothers tried to step in, but officers used pepper spray. When the boys wouldn't leave either, they were also arrested.

Austin was charged with interfering. Andrew was charged with disorderly conduct and interfering. Several others were charged with disorderly conduct and/or failure to disperse.

Amanda filed a police report on Monday about her assault.

It's troubling that officers wouldn't listen to someone trying to report an assault, and instead allegedly started dishing out doses of pepper spray. If the Montee brothers were sticking up their sister, kudos to them. But I've seen too many situations where the best intentions weren't in mind. Rather, drunken candidacy ruled.

This couldn't be an easy situation for the police to jump into if there really were 30 people mixing it up. It's really hard to get a read on this situation until we know more of the details.

As someone who tended bar for years I can virtually guarantee this is nothing more than the beer talking. It's a shame, but young drunk women take full advantage of their perceived frailness to falsely report stuff all the time. Anything to avoid accountability.

They are lucky all they got was pepper sprayed and arrested....they probably deserved to get knots on their heads....but it looks like they are already short on brains anyway. I guess these apples didn't fall too far from the tree did they?

The notion that she should have just left is ridiculous! She was just assaulted and the police were ignoring her. Put yourself in her shoes! Imagine being assaulted and the police doing nothing, but telling you to go away... Would you just walk away? I highly doubt it. You would stick around trying to tell the officers what had just happened.

If she would have left when they said.....and listened to the police and filed report immediately.......it would be a non story. 30 people = riot if not careful. Police did their job.
