Don Harman tribute videos from Fox 4

Posted by Justin Kendall on Thu, Dec 1, 2011 at 7:28 AM

Fox 4 has put together a couple of moving tribute videos to meteorologist Don Harman, who died Tuesday evening. The above video remembers some of Harman's more memorable moments on Fox 4's morning show. The video after the jump shows the morning news team talking about what Harman was like when the cameras were turned off.

Also worth a read is this blog post by Troy Diggs, a producer on the Fox 4 morning show. It must have been a tough post to write, and it gives a feel of what it was like to go to work the morning after. Touching stuff.

This last video is of the Fox 4 morning news crew talking about Harman's battle with depression. They confirm, with Harman's family's blessing, that Harman committed suicide.

I'm so tired of hearing people say the media wouldn't have waited to report the name if it was "anyone else" who was dead. I work in the media. We NEVER report names unless the police release the name, and they only do that when family notifications have occurred. I don't have any problem with VALID anti-media arguments, but that one is just ignorant and WRONG.

In fact, the fact that Don Harman was a public personality gave him less privacy than "anyone else" because all the media were chomping at the bit to report the news with no respect for the fact that his own father didn't know yet.

"Tears of the Clown"

Many depressed individuals often hide their feelings in humor and laughter as a coping mechanism.

Wow.... This is a LOST. Some mornings I would want to stay home just to watch the entire morning show on Fox4. Donnie will be missed. I don't think I can watch the morning show anymore.

Fox4 has the respect to wait to report on a death until the family is notified when it's one of their own. I'm guessing they've never made sure they waited to report on the death/suicide of any other public figures until all of the family had been notified.

Pretty funny PT Cruiser, you tell us not buy, buy, buy, but then tell us to take them to dinner. You do realize eating out is buy, buy, buy, don't you?

How about you fix a meal as a family (or with firends)and talk while making adinner everyone can be proud of to eat. Then you are eating healthier and eliminate some consumerism that is slowly killing this country.

I am saddened to hear of the passing of Mr. Harmon. What I liked about him was the fact that he took life by the horns in spite of his depression. He evidently fought a good fight. Depression is nothing to play with and take lightly. Instead of running to the malls and buying, buying, buying, take your love ones to dinner and be thankful for everyday. Let everyone share their innermost thoughts and don't interrupt. Listen. Just listen. Tomorrow is not promised to any of us.

Being that the hacks at the Pitch decided to break the story before Mr. Harman's father was notified, this "tribute" seems like a form of unlikely respect after the fact. I know that the Pitch isn't actual journalism, but I was somehow suprised nonetheless that they stooped so low.

I too suffer with depression, the hardest part is motivating yourself everyday to keep going. Some of us can't see what difference we make in this world and decide to leave it. I was lucky enough to find help that taught me how to cope with my form of depression which is probably less severe than what Don was dealing with.

This is where they rest of the broadcasting community needs to step up and send in engineers, etc. to run the place for the day. My guess is it will happen.

Fox 4 should be off the air, on the day of Don's funeral, so all of the Fox 4 family can attend
