The Jayhawks aren’t letting the Tigers go without a few parting shots. Highway commuters along the metro’s I-35 have spotted a series of KU-sponsored “We are KANSAS City” billboards, professing the Jayhawks’ love for the city (see above). It’s a juicy Rock Chalk f-you to the Tigers, courtesy of KU’s marketing department. It’s something the Tigers should have done, to shut up those who believe Mizzou’s move is tantamount to abandoning KC.
But don’t worry, Mizzou marketing department, we’ve got you covered. We offer three billboard slogans that Missouri could yet put up to shove it back in KU’s face.Â

Last time I checked, downtown KC, the Plaza, the Sports Complex, the Sprint Center, Power & Light, Westport, American Royal, MCI, Bryant's and Gates, the Nelson Art Gallery, Truman Library, the new performing arts center, UMKC and Rockhurst, Union Station, Liberty Memorial, the Negro League Museum, and the house I grew up in all have one thing in common. They are in the State of Missouri as is MU. My conclusion is that KC is a Missouri town whether you Johnson County dip'its like it or not
@DWV412: "Do you think the SEC schools are going to jump at the chance to come to Columbia to see their school play? No. Do you think the SEC schools are going to turn out in droves when MU comes to town to play? No. Do you know why? Nobody cares, they are not rivals, they don't matter, they have no history in the conference."
You obviously know nothing about SEC fans. YES we will turn out in droves at BOTH sites. Its just what we do, we pride ourselves on it. SEC fans have been known to buy season tickets of out of state schools just to get a ticket for the ONE game when their team shows up (that is not a joke).
Speak all you want about what you know, but you might do better staying mum on what you know nothing about.
@ DWV412 who's city is it again? You are a confused jaydork that sees everything from Johnson Cty rose-colored glasses. Come to Northeast KCMO wearing a jaydork shirt. Or even a bumper sticker, see how long your tires stay on your car lol. KCMO sends ALL of it's talent to MU you stupid moron. All of KCMO's athletes go to MU - not kU. THAT is the mark of who a city supports, not some overpriced, silly billboard campaign hatched in a kU office restroom. Are you too stupid to even look at rosters?
MU Tigers MM Roster> Denmon, Dixon, Moore, Sutton...all from KCMO.
MU Tigers Football Roster> 46 players from in-state MO and 20+ from KC side. That's more players from KCMO and MO suburbs than ALL of kU's players from the state of Kansas. KCMO is MU country, johnsonville cty is kU, you should have put your billboards out there.
@stephanos I'm beginning to think people posting in here that are MU fans must be completely brain dead.
Here is what you said
"Big12 is toast. GOOD for you MU, haters are worthless!
TX & OK will leave or form a new conf soon.
kU & kState will then be left to form a new conference with N. Dakota, S. Dakota, I State, Northern Iowa, Moorehead State, etc. They can call that new conference the "BIG NOWHERE". kU & kState can play all of their new confernce games in the Wichiterrrr dome!"
The Big 12 just restructured a new six year TV deal with major penalties if you opt out of the conference. This deal puts them in line with the money that the SEC schools share. If and when the conference expands to 12 (Louisville is already telling recruits they are Big 12 bound) then they are set to restructure their TV deal to 10 years. This conference with the new additions of TCU and West Virginia make it a great football conference as well as at the top in basketball with the ACC.
OU and UT aren't going anywhere. OU won't leave without OSU and there isn't a conference that will take them. They just all signed on for this TV deal and they are set to ream the benefits of all the money they're about to make. Equal revenue sharing is part of this deal.
Some people are just plain stupid, you really scream that loud and clear.
Now KC is an SEC & Big? city. Can't wait to see MIZZOU play great teams like Georgia, LSU, Alabama, Auburn, Arkansas - exciting stuff. More money for KCMO. BTW, who owns these billboards? The must have cleaned up.
@harbinger911 Wow, you make this too easy. First, get a lesson in grammar before you talk shit.
KCMO loves when KU is in town to play basketball, they know the Sprint Center will sell out. That's a feat that neither K-State or MU can claim.
Kansas City has a long history of being the center of college basketball. We have held more Final Fours here than any other city. Maybe MU fans forget that since they've never been to a Final Four (cheap shot, but just saying). Kansas City has always been a huge supporter of the Big 8 and Big 12 and will continue to be since it is central for the conference.
Now that MU is gone, there is no reason for KC to support MU. KC isn't and will never be a SEC city. Think of Texas Tech and Baylor, these are schools in the Big 12 that you will be able to compare MU to in the SEC. They aren't original members of the conference, they don't have long standing existing rivalries, and they are fairly insignificant. Do you think the SEC schools are going to jump at the chance to come to Columbia to see their school play? No. Do you think the SEC schools are going to turn out in droves when MU comes to town to play? No. Do you know why? Nobody cares, they are not rivals, they don't matter, they have no history in the conference.
I'm not trying to take cheap shots, but I think MU fans need to get over the bragging and actually realize that the SEC is not going to roll out the red carpet and be kind to them. The fans of these schools aren't going to have the passion that the Big 12 schools have when they play each other. Rivalries take time to build.
Big12 is toast. GOOD for you MU, haters are worthless!
TX & OK will leave or form a new conf soon.
kU & kState will then be left to form a new conference with N. Dakota, S. Dakota, I State, Northern Iowa, Moorehead State, etc. They can call that new conference the "BIG NOWHERE". kU & kState can play all of their new confernce games in the Wichiterrrr dome!
While kU lost to N Dakota in football MU was beating Arkansas! GO SEC!
KCMO could care less about kU, but we'll keep taking your money! Keep buying stupid billboards and spending cash downtown hayseeds, we love it. Why should MU buy billboards? Rank and file Kansas Citians are loyal to and ATTEND MU already. They don't need t run a stupid ad campaign. This article must be written by some clever (lol) kU grad working as an intern at The sloppy Pitch for free. KCMO's talent goes to MU, not KU. So how is kU (are) kansas City? Why couldn't we have Colorado next to our cool city, how did we end up with dipshit kansas. They even named their stateafter our city. Kansas City Missouri was an incorporated city before kansas was a state. Can't they do anything original over there?
@Tony Hammond. Obviously, you don't know how to read. I'm not even a KU grad, I'm looking at this from an outside perspective. Again, bad misjudgement on your behalf.
Of course MU will have home games, but they'd have to be insanely stupid to move their home games in Columbia to the Sprint Center or Arrowhead when playing divisional opponents. First of all, they'd have to split the revenue. Second, it's highly unlikely that any existing SEC school would travel all the way to KC to see their team play. I mean, they would need at least 40,000 at Arrowhead for it to even make sense.
Tell me how much sense it will make that MU will have to travel no less than 600 miles each time they have to go on the road. The travel budget is going to at least triple, therefore reducing the amount of profit that MU was going to get from moving to the SEC.
I am happy to see MU go, the only thing I was worried about was Kansas City and keeping the Big 12 Tournament here. Now that it's set here for another three years, we can show KC that the Big 12 supports this City without MU being a part of it. MU couldn't even sell out games against ranked opponents this year at the Sprint Center. How awful is that? Do you think KC is going to continue to support MU after their poor attendance and the fact that this is a Big 12 city and they have moved to the SEC? Highly doubtful.
@ DWV412: Have you ever heard of the concept of "conference opponents"? Believe it or not, MU will not play every game on the road. They will actually have home games against conference opponents in Columbia, Missouri. Much like the same folks who said Columbia or Lawrence would never let those home games go to Kansas City, the money said otherwise.
You are precisely the type of KU'er I was posting about. Bitch and moan about MU switching conferences, while bitching and moaning about all the coverage of MU switching conferences. NOW THAT'S STUPID.
"If anything, we'll now have the opportunity to see a larger choice in local sports. MU v Alabama or LSU or Georgia at Arrowhead? Yeah, yeah, the KU'ers will say that would never happen, but college sports is business not pom-poms. When the money is there, the teams will show up"
Just in case you didn't notice, the SEC is in the South. There is no way that LSU, Alabama, or Georgia are going to travel all the way to Arrowhead to play a no name school in their conference like MU. Why would they? They'd have to split the revenue with MU and it's hundreds of miles from their campuses. If this was every going to happen, it would be in Atlanta or New Orleans. Get real, it amazes me how stupid people can be.
I'm so over all this MU crap. Good for you, you are abandoning your conference, your rivalries, and Kansas City to move hundreds of miles away where your closest rival will be 600 miles from Columbia. Pat yourselves on the back. Sure, you want to count up all that money? Kiss it goodbye on travel expenses. Kansas City is over MU. This city has more KU fans anyway. Don't believe me? Look at the CBE Classic, lot's of empty seats there. Then look at when KU played a nobody in Colorado State last year, the place was sold out.
Just leave and stop whining about why KU won't schedule games with MU anymore. The truth is, at least in basketball, MU needs KU, but KU has no need for MU. MU can't sell out a basketball game to save it's life. Who cares about the MU/KU series in football anyway? It's not like the teams are ranked each year. Basketball is the history between these two. Oh wait, MU has never even made a Final Four. At least MU can hang their hats on football, oh wait, they've never won a conference championship. Keep on bragging.
Bye.
Oh, the irony. Go pick up a history book and you will find out that the state of Kansas is named after a Missouri City. Heck, Kansas was still a territory back then.
I wonder if this is how Illinois or Tulsa felt when Bill Self turned his back on them? That hypocritical phony-hair bastard.
SERIOUSLY, you can't take K-state seriously in football, because they don't play anybody................they played MU and as I recall beat MU. I WAS and maybe still am a MU fan, but sometimes you people on here say the stupidest things.
Think of it this way: Missouri is headed to a REAL conference in the SEC, while KU and K-State are stuck in their joke of a conference - a joke of their own making. When it comes to football, as bad as KU is at the sport, you can't take K-State seriously because they NEVER PLAY ANYBODY! And don't get me started on basketball.
"My god, are you gayhawkers so insecure that you completely define yourselves by your rivalry with MU ?"
...says the fanbase who buys other colleges' shirts as surrogates for meaningful victories of your own.
FYI - the author is neither an MU nor a KU grad.
I love the Pitch because it isn't over-serious, and is willing to be opinionated. You are reading the 'Plog' remember. There are tons of other places you can read about sports if you feel butt-hurt from this story. If I were a Mizzou fan - which thankfully not - I would happily embrace the billboard examples provided above! SEC-YA Later!
I am so tired of MIZ-ers hating on KU and vice versa. Get over yourselves.
Geez, this rag gets more desperate every day for attention.
Kendall must have been denied admission to MU and has to justify his (as well as the KU administration) "jilted girlfriend" disposition with his nonsensical drum beating.
No one has ever been able to answer how the hell moving to another conference is tantamount to "leaving". Stupid rubes. They didn't pack the campus up and physically trek down south. If anything, we'll now have the opportunity to see a larger choice in local sports. MU v Alabama or LSU or Georgia at Arrowhead? Yeah, yeah, the KU'ers will say that would never happen, but college sports is business not pom-poms. When the money is there, the teams will show up.
So instead of looking like ass-hats and crying over change, make the best of it and in turn, benefit Kansas City.
There's also a billboard where 71 north meets the downtown loop that has a picture of KC, the Big 12 logo, and the Jayhawk and Wildcat logos. It's pretty funny how bad Mizzou looks right now.
Hit the road Mizzou. Nobody will miss you. Bye-Bye now.
Is this the freaking Onion? What the hell else are you going to make up to fill space. Please don't waste our time with this bs kind of "journalism"????????????????????
we are going to a new conference and you stupid jhawks and your -58million dollar in debt athletic dept are going to the mountain west or A10. Can't seem to find anyone who wants to coach your sorry football team either.
SEC!!! GO TIGERS!!
P.S. Beakers. Kansas City is Missouri. You can have the crappy Kansas side dump.
My god, are you gayhawkers so insecure that you completely define yourselves by your rivalry with MU ? It's none of your business which conference the Tigers choose to compete in! Maybe they're just looking for the kind of challenge on the gridiron that kansas could not deliver.
