This was the game that even a die-hard Chiefs' fan would have trouble sitting through to the end. If you left the television before the Chiefs' lone touchdown in the fourth quarter, than you missed commentator Dan Fouts' line of the game as he called Tyler Palko's pass to Jerheme Urban an "our father" (the churchy cousin to last week's Hail Mary against the Bears). Welcome to what you hope is a glimpse of the Chiefs' Christmas future, a wake-up call that the Red and Gold need a paradigm shift.
We saw our Christmas past. Tyler Palko sitting on the bench after another three-and-out, a member of the coaching staff (perhaps showing him pictures and explaining who his receivers are) with the playbook open next to him. The Chiefs had four yards of offense in the first half.
We saw our Christmas present, as well. Dwayne Bowe dropping a sure touchdown on fourth-and-10. The Jets tackling Jackie Battle in the end zone for a safety when it was already 35-10. And the Chiefs are now a team with eight losses (six of which have been by 27 points or more).
And that just leaves our potential Christmas future. Todd Haley and Scott Pioli believing that one of the four quarterbacks on the roster is the answer. The fact that the Chiefs may end the season with someone from the stands playing safety. And the undefeated Green Bay Packers headed to town next Sunday.
The second half was brutal. But if Bill Murray and Michael Caine can change, maybe we all can change. Murray asks for a Christmas miracle at the end of Scrooged, and it looks like that's what the Chiefs will need just to finish with a .500 record. Perhaps Santa can line up under center for the home team. He's one of the few guys left in a red suit whom I can believe in.
