The Salina Journal reports, "The girl recruited to have sex with Brown testified at his trial that she did not want to have sex with Brown but did it because she feared her classmates." And the story gets worse. After the girl was coerced into having sex with Brown, he gave the girls a baggie of salt rather than meth.
Brown managed to get a shorter sentence through legal wrangling. In his 2008 trial, the judge refused to let Brown represent himself because the charges were so serious, he had a history of mental-health issues, and he knew nothing about the law. He was convicted of several charges including rape and aggravated indecent solicitation of a child, and was sentenced to 15 years in prison.
Brown appealed his conviction, claiming that he should have been able to represent himself. The Kansas Court of Appeals sided with Brown and ordered a new trial, which was slated to start earlier this month. But on the day before the trial was to begin, Brown struck a deal with Assistant Saline County Prosecutor Christina Trocheck. He pleaded guilty to identical felony charges and was sentenced to 12 years in prison. Perhaps the only part of this story that makes any sense is Trocheck's reason for taking the reduced sentence. She told The Journal that she wanted to spare the victim from testifying in the case again. At least there's that.
