Romeo Crennel may have a lot to smile about soon.

It's the classic tale of a young lawyer given community service and coaching up a team that nobody wants into a group of lovable winners. Wait, I'm sorry, that's the plot of The Mighty Ducks. As ESPN's Adam Schefter reports, "The Kansas City Chiefs plan to retain interim head coach Romeo Crennel." This is how real life works. You promote your stalwart defensive coordinator, who has a good relationship with the players, and you bring in a legitimate offensive coordinator so he doesn't have to worry about calling the plays.

It's a move that makes sense. In his three games as head coach, Crennel guided the Chiefs to a 2-1 record with wins over Denver and Green Bay (the Packers' only loss of the season). The Chiefs were actually a pair of blocked field goals away from making the playoffs, falling to the Raiders only because of the incredible special teams play of Oakland's Richard Seymour.

We put Crennel as the clear favorite a month ago when setting the odds on who would permanently replace fired coach Todd Haley. And while Jeff Fisher and Jack Del Rio have both sat down with the team, there were no indications that either was a serious candidate to move forward. If Schefter is right, and he usually breaks news only when he has multiple sources to confirm what he's hearing, then Crennel is in. Now that it's out there, how are you feeling, Chiefs' nation?
