Four days before the shooting, Carney had celebrated his 38th birthday on January 31. He is Kansas City, Missouri's ninth homicide victim of 2012.
Police say several witnesses were outside in the area around the time of the shooting. They're asking anyone with info to call the TIPS Hotline at 816-474-8477.

He was someone's family member. Despite what caused his demise, he was still loved by someone. It's amazing how YOU PEOPLE can cast judgment, assume and make ignorant comments without thought or intellect.
I wonder if, before he was killed, Vernon had time to get to a movie theater and see "Red Tails", an all-American story about a group of underdog black fighter pilots who overcome the adversity of racism, segregation, and discrimination during World War Two to fly their way into the history books as heroes.
People don't just get killed. Live by the gun, die by the gun. When will you people realize this? Why you so hurt and surprised? If you care about your people, tell them to get out the streets. Idiots!
