Time Warner Cable could be getting some competition for TV subscribers ... from Google

Posted by Justin Kendall on Thu, Feb 23, 2012 at 8:29 AM

Google TV could be coming to KCMO.
  • Google TV could be coming to KCMO.
Google isn't just bringing high-speed Internet to Kansas City. The Internet Goliath wants to bring a television service to KCMO.

The Wall Street Journal reported that Google has applied to bring video service to KCMO. And it could start quickly. If Google gets the go-ahead, Google could launch the TV service within a month. Wow. That's huge. Like most of you, I have Time Warner Cable. It's the only choice I have for cable, and TWC just raised my rates. Google coming into the market could provide some much needed competition.

I live in the SKC area and I gave Time Warner there equipment back. I would rather watch the traffic drive by than pay for poor service.

I now have a Cricket usb 3g thumb drive in my desktop that is more reliable(even with this storm blowing through not even the smallest blink) and as fast as the Cable modem THAT I was over paying for. That is bad Time Warner when you cant beat what is becoming out dated cell phone technology. I don't think they are even trying to compete. Oh and if i want to I can plug it i the laptop and use it wherever, pretty much.

Google won't have much to fight with.

I can only get TWC and I can not wait to see Google take a ton of the customers from them and they will!!!!!!!!!!! TWC has a terrible attitude towards customers, especially existing ones. They are very helpful until you sign up and then you are nobody to them! They have upset me so much that I completely disconnected the tv part and only have the internet. It is hard at times but I can still watch a lot of the shows on the internet and to not have to pay 54.00 a month to be aggravated it's worth it.

Cant wait for TimeWarner to die a slow painful death. I called to complain that my bill was $40 higher than a friend of mine that had the exact same plan. The rep literally said it was because there is no competition in my area. Then she smugly asked if I had any other questions then hung up on me. F@ck You Time Warner.

njd - the part that really ticked me off was TWC trying to tell everybody that losing those movie channels unless you buy a package was an "upgrade" to our service. Bastards.

I'm currently paying month-to-month because I won't commit to another year contract with TWC. Told them flat-out: with Google coming, I'd be crazy to lock myself into their crappy service to save a few bucks. As soon as there's a decent alternative, they can kiss my business goodbye.

And I've been a TWC customer for a long time - I was one of their beta testers for Roadrunner when it was first rolled out here.

RICHIEPOOR: Last I checked my cousin in Mizery had the identical service to me in JoCo and mine was $7 higher. Granted that, TWC still sucks

It can't be anyworse than Comcast. We need more options to break up the cable t.v. monopoly. My option is either Comcast or Dish Network. They're both junk....& very over priced.

I will definitely take a long hard look at any service google has to offer. I had to switch to Time Warner from Directv after I moved in with my girlfriend in her completely tree-surrounded house, and my God TWC is a debacle. Their DVR is a complete piece of garbage that randomly decides not to record things once every two or three weeks, their programming offerings are horrible (no NFL Network? Seriously?), and even the argument that they never lose reception the way dishes can went out the window when they lost the ESPN feed for two straight Big Monday games. I'm a Mizzou fan, so I wasn't that heartbroken that I couldn't watch KU-KState, but on the other hand, if Time Warner isn't even worried about taking care of KU fans in this Jayhawk-centric market, they're pretty clearly not worried about taking care of anybody.

Lets hope TWC will lose many many customers. I'm sick of TW and their high prices for crappy repeated shows!

TWC is over priced. They use to lower their rates to residents in Everest/Surewest areas but kept the rates jacked up in non competition areas. I went with Uverse which is better and cheaper than Time Warner.

i hate time warner and how they have the monopoly of the cable in this town. I was told they have the "rights" to certain neighborhoods and thats why U-verse is not available for me...even though im only a few blocks away from the AT&T store in westport.

I was about to switch to DirecTV, but maybe ill wait to see what this Google thing is all about.

TWC is turrrible. just turrrible.

Just switched to DirecTV today and couldn't be happier! It's about a $75/month savings. Peace out TWC!

For years TWC has been ripping off Kansas City residents with monthly rates that are substantially higher for the same exact service a subscriber can get in Overland Park. In other words, they relish in discriminating against those of us who live in the urban core. Their customer loyalty hinges on the fact that they are the only real option outside of DISH and Direct TV. Bring on the competition and let's see TWC fall over backwards to reduce fees and increase customer service but I would suspect most of us who are fed up with TWC will jump at the chance to go elsewhere.

TWC's customer service sucks ass.

Lets see what some competition does for the market.

I'm so glad I live in an area that has Uverse. TWC is the worst.

Great news. I am sick of TWC they have taken several channels from my basic package and move them to a premium package and still charge the same for less channels. Goodbye Time Warner!

Lest we forget that the past two Mondays TWC has lost its ESPN feed during major Big 12 basketball games. I can't believe a pitchfork-wielding mob hasn't attacked that place yet.
